By the time he reached adolescence, Robert knew his destiny was to be a jazz musician. He was accepted to the Houston's famed High School for the Performing Arts ("Jason Moran went there before me."). Post-graduation, Glasper enrolled at New School University in Manhattan. Soon after arrival, he hooked up with future bandmember Reid and vocalist Bilal, an old schoolmate. As an undergrad, Glasper gigged with Christian McBride, Russell Malone and Kenny Garrett. Professional life after the New School was even sweeter: stints with Nicholas Payton, Roy Hargrove, Terence Blanchard, Carmen Lundy, and Carly Simon.
The Bilal connection brought the pianist back to hip-hop. Glasper's contributions to Bilal's debut and subsequent tour brought him to the attention of Q-Tip (A Tribe Called Quest). "Tip would come hang out at my shows, and one day he called me and said, βI'm doing this tour and I need you to play keys. Can you do it?ββ He's also since played with Mos Def, and is featured prominently on Bilal's forthcoming sophomore release.
In 2003, Glasper's first album Mood was released on indie label Fresh Sound New Talent, and two years later, Blue Note came calling. At Blue Note, Glasper joins a jazz piano legacy that stretches back to 1939, beginning with Albert Ammons and Meade Lux Lewis, and continuing through Thelonious Monk, Bud Powell, Herbie Hancock, McCoy Tyner, Chick Corea, Andrew Hill, Cecil Taylor, Gonzalo Rubalcaba, Jacky Terrasson, Jason Moran and Bill Charlap. Undaunted, Glasper reflects, βIβm just happy to be a part of the Blue Note family and its rich history.β

Voyage To Atlantis
Robert Glasper Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴
Whoa, how can I know
If I go on my way without you
Whoa, where would I go
Set sail with me
Misty lady, set my spirit free
New love to find
I'll always come back to you
I'll always come back to you
I'll always come back to you
I'll always come back to you
She's my lady, now and ever
Whoa, how can I know
Can we go all the way together?
Oh, let it be so
So we'll say our last goodbye
And we'll make it this time
Oh, set sail with me
To a paradise out beyond the sea
Atlantis is back to you
I'll always come back to you
Atlantis is back to you
I'll always come back to you
Oh, come back to you
I'll always come back to you
Oh, come back to you
Always come back to you
I'll come back
Come back to you
Oh
Come back to you
Always come back
Always come back
Oh yeah
Always come back
Oh
Always come back
Always
Always come back
Always
Always come back
(Always come back)
(Always come back)
(Always come back)
(Always come back)
Always come back to you, my babe, babe (always come back)
Always come back to you, my darling, darling (always come back)
Always come back to you, my baby, baby (always come back)
Always come back to you, my darling (always come back)
Always come back to you (yeah, yeah)
Always come back to you (yeah, yeah)
Always come back to you (always come back) (yeah, yeah)
Always come back to you (always come back)
Always come back to you (always come back)
Always come back to you (always come back)
Always
Always
Always come back to you
I'll always come back to you
I'll always come back to you
Always, always come back to you
The lyrics of "Voyage to Atlantis" by Robert Glasper reflect a deep emotional struggle and longing for love and connection. The opening lines express a sense of uncertainty and dependency on the other person, questioning the possibility of moving forward without them. The singer is conflicted about what their life would look like without this significant other and where they would even go without them.
As the song progresses, the narrative shifts to a plea for companionship and a desire for a new beginning with the person they love. The imagery of setting sail together towards new horizons symbolizes a fresh start and leaving behind past regrets. The pursuit of new love and the acknowledgement of leaving someone behind to embark on this journey evokes a sense of bittersweet nostalgia and hope for the future.
The repeated refrain of "I'll always come back to you" serves as a powerful declaration of loyalty and commitment to the beloved. The mention of Atlantis, a mythical lost city, represents a metaphor for a deep and profound connection that transcends time and space. The singer vows to always return to their partner, emphasizing the enduring nature of their love and the undeniable bond that exists between them.
The final verses convey a sense of resolution and acceptance as the singer acknowledges the necessity of saying goodbye and moving forward together towards a brighter future. The reassurance that they will always find their way back to each other reinforces the theme of eternal love and the unbreakable bond shared between two souls. Overall, "Voyage to Atlantis" is a heartfelt exploration of love, longing, and the enduring power of connection that transcends distance and time.
