He was born in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories, Canada, and grew up in Penticton, British Columbia, Canada. He is the first international performer to win the Individual Championship title at the National Poetry Slam 2000 in the U.S. state of Rhode Island.

Shane is a dynamic and charismatic artist whose performances are jaw-dropping in their expressive power. His delivery follows that of slam poetry and his performances and personae are at the vanguard of the live poetry circuit in the U.S., Canada & the UK.

His written work has been well received in Canada & the UK. The initial print-run for his book Visiting Hours dwarfed the industry standards for poetry books. Visiting Hours was recommended as a Book of the Year 2005 by the Guardian and the Globe and Mail.

Together with Mighty Mike McGee and C. R. Avery, he is the co-founder of spoken word, "talk rock" trio, Tons of Fun University.

We are more than the talking heads

We are more than just the politicians who pretend to represent us.

We are more than just the simple, the easy, the convenient stereotypes, yes, we're polite, but we are more.

We are considerate, and at the same time able to laugh at ourselves.

We are a parody of ourselves, but we are more;

We can take a joke, or some good natured ribbing, because we are not afraid of the preconceived stereotypes that the world puts upon us, no, we're proud of them.

Do we like bacon?
Beer?
Hockey?
Going out for a rip?
Oh, fuck, yeah, bud.

There are no stereotypes that the world can put on us that we haven't already recognized,

And subsequently embraced.

We are more,

Because we take it all in stride;
We love being the butt of the joke, because we have very little to insecure about.

We take it on as a part of our purpose in life;

If we can't make you laugh WITH us,

We'll DAMN sure make you laugh AT us.

Either way, we made you smile, and either way, we all win.

We are more.

More than what you used to think,

And more than we, ourselves, ever thought we could be.

And we're all learning more about it every day...

You know why you love being Canadian? It's because Canadian patriotism isn't found by putting on a cheap and tacky red and white hat. It's not found by merely waving a flag or by watching some sporting event. No, Canadian patriotism is experiential. It happens when we're with each other and nodding at a total stranger who you are connected with by the knowledge that he or she can walk into any hospital in the land and not have to worry about paying the hydro bill because of it. You know you are Canadian when you realize there is NOTHING else you'd rather be. The best part? This country's only gettin' started!! 🇨🇦
