Chad Petree and Jeremy Dawson grew up in Oklahoma and were involved in previous music projects together, including the soundtrack for the videogame Grand Theft Auto III in 2000 and Cloud2Ground. After relocating to Los Angeles, California in 2004, the two recruited vocalist Carah Faye Charnow and drummer Mikey Martin.
Their debut album, We Are Pilots was originally released in January 2005, though versions of the album featuring different cover art and tracklisting would be released later the following year. Three singles were issued: "Le Disko", "You Are the One" and "Rainy Monday". We Are Pilots received a Grammy Award nomination on 6 December 2007 in the category of Best Electronic/Dance Album, but lost to The Chemical Brothers.
The band's second studio album, Season of Poison, was released on 4th November 2008, with Sisely Treasure as vocalist. They have released two singles from their second album: "Ghost Town" and "Ricochet!".
In 2009, Shiny Toy Guns released "Major Tom", a Peter Schilling cover.
In 2011, Carah Faye Charnow returned to Shiny Toy Guns. In addition, Daniel Johansson also joined the band on guitar, synth and bass. In March 2011, the band released a new single "The Sun", available to download for free.
In May 2012 the band announced that Daniel Johansson left the band.

Stay Down
Shiny Toy Guns Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Two halves but never a whole
And when you fall asleep alone
Are you dreaming of all of the things
That I will never know?
They're all the lies you turn to red
(I've got this feeling again)
(I've got this feeling again)
Stay down
Don't let your cover go away
Under this rain cloud
Stay down
Don't let your cover go away
On our way out
The spies have come for your arrest
Tongue tied with the curse from your lips
And don't you say what you'll regret
Don't crucify what's nailed above my head
And now you're reaching for my hand
(I've got this feeling again)
'Cause you are sinking in the sand
(I've got this feeling again)
Stay down
Don't let your cover blow away
Under the rain clouds
Stay down
Don't let your cover blow away
On our way out
our way out
Oh,oh,oh
The cover explodes when dying stars
Take their last breath
I've got this feeling again
We trip but the lightning still sticks up
And I've got this feeling again
Stay down
Don't let your cover blow away
Under this rain cloud
Stay down
Don't let your cover blow away
On our way out
On our way out
On our way out
The lyrics to Shiny Toy Guns' song "Stay Down" speak to the tension and uncertainty in a relationship. The opening lines, "If I stay or if you go / Two halves but never a whole," set the tone for the song by questioning whether the relationship is complete or doomed to fail. The idea of dreaming about things one will never know further emphasizes the feeling of distance between the two partners.
The song takes a darker turn with the line, "The spies have come for your arrest / Tongue tied with the curse from your lips," suggesting that there may be secrets being kept or lies being told that threaten the relationship. The plea to "stay down" and not let the cover be blown away is a call for the other person to hold on and not reveal any compromising information. The chorus repeats this sentiment, urging the listener to stay hidden under the rain clouds and not let the cover be blown away.
Overall, "Stay Down" is a song that expresses the fear and uncertainty that can come with being in a relationship, especially one that may be on shaky ground. The lyrics hint at hidden secrets and lies, and the repeated refrain to "stay down" suggests a desperate attempt to hold on to what is left of the relationship.
