Always Look On the Bright Side of Life
Simon & Garfunkel Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Always look on the bright side of life
Always look on the bright side of life

Some things in life are bad, they can really make you mad
Other things just make you swear and curse
When you're chewing on life's gristle, don't grumble give a whistle
This will help things turn out for the best
Always look on the bright side of life
Always look on the right side of life

If life seems jolly rotten, there's something you've forgotten
And that's to laugh and smile and dance and sing
When you're feeling in the dumps, don't be silly, chumps
Just purse your lips and whistle, that's the thing

So, always look on the bright side of death
Just before you draw your terminal breath

Life's a counterfeit and when you look at it
Life's a laugh and death's the joke, it's true
You see, it's all a show, keep them laughing as you go
Just remember the last laugh is on you

Always look on the bright side of life
And always look on the right side of life

Always look on the bright side of life
And always look on the right side of life

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Simon & Garfunkel's song "Always Look on the Bright Side of Life" convey a message of optimism and resilience in the face of life's challenges and hardships. The song encourages listeners to maintain a positive outlook, even when things are going wrong. It acknowledges that there are times when life can be frustrating and disheartening, but suggests that by embracing a lighthearted perspective and finding humor in difficult situations, one can navigate through life's ups and downs.

The lyrics begin by acknowledging that some things in life can be infuriating or exasperating, but rather than dwelling on negativity, the song advises to give a whistle and try to see the silver lining. It emphasizes the importance of looking on the bright side, even when it may be difficult to do so. The second verse reminds listeners not to forget the simple pleasures of laughter, smiling, dancing, and singing, which can uplift the spirit even in times of sadness. It suggests that by pursing one's lips and whistling, one can find a sense of joy and positivity.

The final verse takes a slightly more philosophical turn, stating that life is essentially a theatrical production, and death is its punchline. It suggests that life is fleeting and unpredictable, and that the true nature of existence is to be humorous. The song concludes by reiterating the importance of looking on the bright side, both in life and in death.

People are way overthinking this. It's not done for laughs, it's not "deliberately over-produced" - that isn't Art Garfunkel's style, never was. This is a serious take on a humourous song - and it works surprisingly well. There was existential pathos hidden in the original, revealed quite brilliantly here.
