Electricity
Simon & Garfunkel Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Got my appetite and I'm hungry for you
Waves crashing, tide turning
I just don't seem to drown

No island in sight, no place of refuge
Feels good though
Having you around
And the flowers bloom
And the lights go out in our room

You're not a wild guess or a happenstance
Guess it's just serendipity

You're not a wild guess or a happenstance
Guess it's just serendipity,
You know it

Time with you is so photo-voltaic
My spark is your electricity

And the flowers bloom
And the lights go out in our room

The bullies circle
Their mouths wet with lust
A kind of tropism happening all the time

But I'm not down with that
Not gonna succumb
Cos you brought change into my life

And the flowers bloom
And the lights go out in our room

What is it that you think you want
What is it that you think you need
What is it that you think you want baby

What is it that you think you want
What is it that you think you need
What is it that you think you want baby

What is it that you think you want

What is it that you think you need
What is it that you think you want baby

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Simon & Garfunkel's song "Electricity" depict a deep and intense attraction between two individuals. The opening lines, "Got my appetite and I'm hungry for you, Waves crashing, tide turning, I just don't seem to drown," use vivid imagery to convey the singer's strong desire and infatuation for the other person. Despite the challenges and uncertainties they face, the singer finds comfort and fulfillment in the presence of their companion, as expressed in the lines, "No island in sight, no place of refuge, Feels good though, Having you around."

The chorus, "And the flowers bloom, And the lights go out in our room," suggests a profound connection and intimacy between the two individuals. The blooming of flowers can signify the growth and blossoming of their relationship, while the lights going out in their room symbolizes an intense and passionate encounter.

The second verse introduces the contrast between the singer's relationship and the outside world. The bullies circling, "Their mouths wet with lust," represent the negative energy and predatory behavior present in society. However, the singer resists succumbing to these negative influences because their partner has brought positive change into their life.

In the closing section, the repetition of the lines, "What is it that you think you want, What is it that you think you need, What is it that you think you want baby," suggests a sense of introspection and contemplation. It prompts both the singer and their partner to question their desires and needs, as well as the true nature of their relationship.

Overall, "Electricity" delves into themes of desire, connection, and self-reflection, encapsulating the intense attraction and transformative power of love.

Lyrics:

Hello, darkness, my old friend
I've come to talk with you again
Because a vision softly creeping
Left its seeds while I was sleeping
And the vision that was planted in my brain
Still remains
Within the sound of silence

In restless dreams I walked alone
Narrow streets of cobblestone
'Neath the halo of a streetlamp
I turned my collar to the cold and damp
When my eyes were stabbed by the flash of a neon light
That split the night
And touched the sound of silence

And in the naked light I saw
Ten thousand people, maybe more
People talking without speaking
People hearing without listening
People writing songs that voices never share
No one dared
Disturb the sound of silence

"Fools," said I, "You do not know
Silence like a cancer grows
Hear my words that I might teach you
Take my arms that I might reach you."
But my words like silent raindrops fell
And echoed in the wells of silence

And the people bowed and prayed
To the neon god they made
And the sign flashed out its warning
In the words that it was forming
And the sign said, "The words of the prophets
Are written on the subway walls
And tenement halls
And whispered in the sounds of silence."

[ in praise of audio engineers, editors of sound ] Aged 21, Paul Simon in 1963 wrote THE SOUNDS OF SILENCE. The studio audition of it for Tom Wilson of Columbia Records secured Simon and Art Garfunkel a record deal.

In October 1964 the Simon and Garfunkel debut album, Wednesday Morning, 3 A.M. included the acoustic The Sounds of Silence. The album was a commercial failure, selling just 3,000 copies in the USA on release. At the time Simon and Garfunkel were not a working outfit.

Months passed. Then something happened. News arrived that some disc jockey were playing the song. And noting the success of recently released songs by The Byrds (Turn! Turn! Turn!) and Bob Dylan (Mr. Tambourine Man, Like a Rolling Stone) Wilson at Columbia heard something, he got an idea.

In June 1965 Roy Halee, the debut album's audio engineer, with encouragement from Wilson remixed the recording.

Halee added [shudder] electric guitars, bass and drums.

The remix was released, as a single retitled Sounds of Silence. It took time but in January 1966 the single hit No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. It was a top 10 hit worldwide.

At the time Simon was in Denmark, he'd been singing on his own in Europe. He read about the remixed song's success in music papers. Hearing it for the first time he hated it.

But, quickly a second album was recorded, and released in 1966 titled Sounds of Silence. It featured the remixed version of the song. The rest is history.

This is 1966 version of the song, which was actually remixed by a radio station, adding the electric instruments and drums to the song, effectively making it a number one hit. The original song was recored in 1964 and only featured acoustic guitar as an instrument. Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel split when they didn't receive such great success in 1964. Luckily, one radio station hired musicians to remix the song, and dubbed electric instruments and drums over the original, released the new remixed version under their name in 1966 and began playing that version on air, making Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel reunite again in 1966 and again perform together.

I thought that Tom Wilson produced this version shortly after getting the boot by Mr Bob Dylan in mid 1965.

Perry Bailey

I love this version. I'm a 60's child, and I love the electric guitar. The original version is good too, but this one is more upbeat.

This is the radio version of my youth. It was a monster hit played all the time and everywhere because it was damn good.

The drums in this really do it justice. Just like flashes of machine gun fire to feed the song into the following verse
