@Kevin Jeronne Gador if you have an Nvidia GPU, remove GPU, uninstall all audio and graphic drivers. Put GPU back in and then reinstall drivers with GeForce experience. Hope that helps.

Finally, a fix to the annoying Windows 10 crackling audio issue that actually works! Just like you, I went through the entire list of standard advice, but to no avail. Turned out I had to deactivate one of my other audio drivers which was causing the issue in my setup. So simple, that I didn't even think of it, even though switching off parts one by one is a pretty commonly used technique for debugging technical systems in general. Thanks!

Thank you! Windows 11, but that little checklist still helped a lot. I had all the drives updated, but no clue what settings might need adjusted. I could never figure out why my audio was crackling and popping and the audio from the tv I use as a monitor sounded so poor. After 6 months of dealing with that, I watch a few of your videos, the crackling and popping is gone, and my audio sounds better than ever! Very much appreciate it!

Your video’s looking great. Nice to see you again…finally getting back to editing some audio here. I was wondering, when you livestream with the dbx286s, 1) how do you connect that to your computer and 2) if you tweak any latency setting to match your camera, how do you do that? Cheers, Andrew

1) Mic into the 286S then into the MixPre-6.
2) If I use Streamyard, I don't because it will vary in sync on it's own. If I use OBS I'll record tests with me clapping and then go into audio settings to tweak the latency until it's spot on.

Why is that an issue? You can go out of the 286S via 1/4" and into MixPre-3 via XLR. They make cables that do that. That's what I use. The MixPre allows you to select mic or line level on the input regardless.

@Sound Speeds oh nice! I thought that some 1/4 inch inputs on combi jacks allowed a hotter input compared to the xlr connection. I’m also wondering now whether the -10db output from the dbx could go direct to my gh5 xlr adapter. Doubtful…that things easy to overload….but maybe. Could step it down with the step down box. But then again, going through the mix pre would allow me to record properly. Ignore me, just thinking out loud here. Hope you’re having a good day mate 👍

This is the best advice yet. It did not get me there, but put me on the path to finally getting my pops/clicks to go away. My case: Try going to Device Manager / System Devices / disable "High Definition Audio Controller" the only thing that worked for me after the pre-requisite 1 year trying to get it to go away with the 800 things to try on YT, Reddit, chat rooms and suggestions. I've had cracking audio from VLC and only VLC through my headphones since I got them and the bit in the intro about changing bitrate solved my problem. I'd tried so many things and that never came up in any article or forum I looked at but this video solved it! Thanks!

This hit the nail, my pc was working ok until I installed a videocard (a geforce 750gtx) and it seemed to cause some conflicts. I was worried the videocard was causing some problem tp the motherboard(I took it from other pc I had), but it seems this was the reason.

In my case, this is what seems to have fixed it, so far: updating to latest Nvidia GPU driver (from their website, not from Windows update). Version 531.29 2023-03-08 for my 3090. Look up the correct one for your own card, of course.

Thank you for this! All I did was disable the "Audiol Enhancements" and my SB G3 finally stop crackling! This works on Windows 11! Though it came back once I play back another Youtube track, turning the audio enhancements on and off seems to stop the crackling until it starts again.

I had a weird issue a couple times where I would get crackling and slowed-down audio from my monitor outputs on my Focusrite Scarlett Interface. I about tore my hair out until I went into the Focusrite settings and noticed that the buffer size was set to 1024. I took it down to 128 and that solved my problem. Seems like the Windows audio environment (i.e. non-ASIO driver) doesn't like large buffer sizes.

It's usually the other way around. Lower numbers means lower latency but higher chance of popping and crackling.

I think audio poping/cracking, to some degree is completly normal and common. I cant explain why this happens myself, but every headset i have tested on different pc's (win10) pops/cracks when audio cut or change in volume. Interestingly, it doesnt happen when i connect headset to the phone(samsung a52). It may be windows 10 unfixable problem overall. I tested hyperx cloud 2, spc gear viro plus and jbl bt500 on 2 different pc's and laptop.

Do you know if it could be a different issue? :( All my drivers are updated, I had been getting crash and audio problems frequently. No longer my PC crashing for now but the audio sometimes is fine and other times is staticy and crap. I tried doing stuff I saw online with things like the control prompt as well

I have this issue on my HP laptop, except I only have 1 audio device - despite this, device manager keeps insisting I have an AMD bit of audio kit...no matter how many times I disable/uninstall it, it reappears after the next shutdown/boot up process and crackles can randomly return.

Unfortunately this didn't fix the VERY specific problem I have of any kind of CPU load, no matter how minimum it is, causing a faint "pop crackle", it use to be a lot worse before I reinstalled my audio driver, but it persists. I've even tried programs like Process Lasso that was suggested in another youtubers video to no avail. It's not nearly enough to really warrant an RMA on my MB or anything but I am extremely disappointed with new technology now lol (looking at you ASUS)

I just bought my son razer kraken v3 x wired usb head set. There is no cracking in games. (Roblox, cod, any steam game) but when he goes to watch videos on YouTube. It starts cracking. Iv done all the steps I can find online just like you did. I'll try this later. Is really starting to make me feel bad as I'm supposed to be a "computer guy" and this was a gift for my sons bday. I'm getting the same issue on a brand new high end music production pc, 13900k, 32gb ddr5, 700w psu. Everything is brand new. Coming from a crapbox pc no crackling on this one, only new one. I have a brand new SSL2+ because my scarlet 2i2 was still crackling and popping on new pc. I thought a new interface would fix it, not the issue... I've tried all of the previous things you recommend and I also tried what you found as a new fix, and didn't seem to work. I mainly noticed the popping and crackling in FL Studio ONLY when moving the cursor around the GUI, then I noticed it outside of FL studio. THE PROBLEM COMPLETELY GOES AWAY IF I USE ONBOARD AUDIO, but onboard is kinda unacceptable vs a powered interface with studio headphones when trying to make the highest quality music. It's freaking WHACK. I've tried EVERYTHING and it's driving me up the wall! I'm going to try your fix one more time, if that doesnt work I might try and make sure there isnt a grounding issue on the motherboard or PSU. I'll probably try to disable the USB 3.x support for the serial bus controllers like someone mentioned in the comments. If you have any other suggestions, I would be forever greatful. Thanks for taking the time to read.

Sorry about that. Windows really does a bad job with USB audio support. Sad really. I haven't gone farther with the troubleshooting of Windows audio because this worked for me.

@SlasherA I think I may have found one. I had an Nvidia graphics card, so I uninstalled all audio and graphic drivers that were Nvidia related AFTER removing my graphics card. Yes, Nvidia has audio drivers. After everything was uninstalled, I restarted and then put the card back in and installed drivers for the GPU with GeForce experience. Restart. It went away for me.

Ah, it's better but not perfect. Still get cracking. When I run that audio monitor program the one thing that causes it to fail the test is Nvidia. No idea what to do about that. I'm on an Ryzen 9-7945HX up to 5.4GHz Processor, 64MB Cache, 16x Cores, 32x Threads / 32GB DDR5 RAM / NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4060 8GB GDDR6. really wish somebody could just come to my house and fix it lol

This is super weird. I just went to Disable all enhancement and then Spatial Sound and changed it from DTS Headphone: X to Dolby Atmos... so far, no crackling... I will update this message if (when) it returns.
I have turned enhancement back on, but none of them are activated (nor where they activated before).

I’ve had this issue for the past year now, and no solution seems to work. The issue seems to be coming from my “(AMD) High Definition Audio Device”, yet nothing I do seems to work. It seems to happen each time I open a specific application/software, then I obviously have to re-open Device Manager, and update my High Definition Audio Device. I've uninstalled the drive, and re-installed it several times, but still... It sort of feels like the issue is caused in someway by the application/software, interfering with my High Definition Audio Device - and I've even deleted, and re-installed the application.

It's Allen my favorite Alien, you speedy little sound source. It's funny the only time I've had that kind of problem was using a 3.5mm to xlr for my at1020 I had when the connector was knocked loose and bent the 3 ring sideways, that happened with my EVGA NU sound card because it's in the bottom slot and the cable is near the edge of my pc case which is rather unconventional and got bent a few times, otherwise just the usual. I've never heard a crackle in the playback, with either the evga or the realtek onboard, and the last time I did hear it was in 2006 when i bought vista and proceeded to destroy my creative audigy 2 zs platinum that worked perfectly in xp. Keep up the good work, also as a pc nerd since i noticed you have a nvidia video card, the card has a built in sound card because hdmi and dvi-a and stuff exist, no matter what you do with the nvidia installer you can't prevent them from being installed, so it's best to go into sounds/playback and disable all of the nvidia sound cards *there is 4 outs on my 1070 with audio*. ATM I'm using my realtek 3.5mm outs to power the JVC in surround mode.

i just think its the nvidia controllers thats having the issue, but maybe its just a compatibility issue with the card and the on board?. anyway i disabled the nvidia controllers and so far so good.

@Sound Speeds nope, i use shutupwin10, nothing gets updated, i use ur22c steinberg and ifi zen dac v2
I try a lot of things like changing USB in mobo that use Motherboard chip or cpu, updated all drivers i can think of, reinstall all drivers i can think of, change power management in Windows, use your hint, even reinstall Windows, and in summary i think i should blame unfortunately a ryzen chip for it... Any side usage of cpu when something is playin in bg cause that audio cracks etc, and always on begining and ending of audio play i can hear that single "pop"... Even 16bit44.1khz dont work 😆

See if a wired headset gives you issues. If it does, the problem is likely in the computer. If not, it's likely related to the headphones.

No guarantees this will work but if you go to Device Manager, look for anything with a question mark, exclamation point or X across it. Right click any such devices and see if it gives you the option to install a driver or enable. If not, click start and type "Add" and see if something related to adding new hardware pops up. That's the only thing I would know to do.

@Sound Speeds there are no question marks nor exclamation points nor X, I tried the "Add" thing and it brought me to bluethooth and other devices page, in that page I can see my monitor option as "Audio" but if I click on it I only get the option "remove", nothing else (ofc I can't right click on it). Sorry but I'm not a computer tech. Try rolling back your computer to a restore point from before you disabled the device or reinstall the drivers for the missing audio. I don't know how to help you otherwise.

What do you mean? I showed the disabling of the devices on screen. The only thing I didn't do is put a mic to my speakers to hear the popping before and lack of them after. Sound people don't use onboard audio devices if they take their audio seriously so it seemed to me that disabling them, like how we disarm channels when we aren't recording on them, was adequate.

That's probably your issue. Get a USB audio interface and you'll get much better results. Onboard audio is seldom if ever decent.

If those are real devices that you use, you can try disabling them and seeing what happens but be prepared to enable them again if you lose functionality
