The group began in 1994, when vocalist Sonja Drakulich followed her vision and created a vehicle for the development of devotional music based in Near Eastern and medieval modal traditions. Extraordinary musicians from diverse cultural backgrounds have since come together within the vessel of Stellamara, creating music with a common intention: to celebrate love, beauty and unity through transcendent harmony, perfect dissonance and passionate rhythms.
Rooted in Turkish, Arabic, Balkan, European medieval and Persian musical traditions, Stellamara carries a deep devotion to the music of these cultures with a unique timeless expression.
At Stellamara’s core are Sonja Drakulich and multi-instrumentalist Gari Hegedus. Together with co-writer and cellist Rufus Cappodocia, they weave together a bridge of unity as they collaborate with an array of inspired musicians. Their music unveils the deep relationship between seemingly disparate cultures while surpassing any confines of tradition.
Through the use of makam - traditional Middle Eastern modal scales and melodic structure - Stellamara’s strong connection to cultural origin is clear, yet they gracefully blend musical forms with both a passionate, highly personal aesthetic and subtle, otherworldly ambiance.
With three critically acclaimed albums, several compilations and independent film scores, Stellamara is now at the forefront in creating highly innovative performances and recordings. They are internationally regarded as a new model in contemporary world music and have developed as an everexpanding vehicle, revealing sublime new levels of mystery, beauty and depth.
Stellamara is currently performing as an electro-acoustic trio, featuring vocalist and producer Sonja Drakulich, multi instrumentalist and producer Miles Jay and multi instrumentalist Evan Fraser. Stellamara also continues to perform as a full acoustic based ensemble, featuring multi-instrumentalist Gari Hegedus, and including guest musicians: percussionists Evan Fraser, Sean Tergis, and Faisal Zedan, violinist Briana Di Mara, and accordionist Dan Cantrell and cellist Rufus Cappadocia.

Prituri Sa Planinata
Stellamara Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
The lyrics of Stellamara's song "Prituri Se Planinata" tell a story about two shepherds who were buried under a mountain as it collapsed. The first verse describes this event as a warning to others, advising them to stay away from the mountains as they can be treacherous. The next verse is a plea from the shepherds for release from their situation, with the first shepherd asking to be let go because his lover is waiting for him, and the second asking to be released because his aging mother is waiting for him. The final verse describes the futility of their pleas, with the mountain remaining closed and the two shepherds remaining trapped, with the first shepherd mourning his lost love until the evening and the second shepherd's mother grieving for him until the day she dies.
The lyrics of "Prituri Se Planinata" use a combination of Bulgarian and Serbian words, but the most significant aspect of the song is the use of the Bulgarian folk song "Sableyalo Mi Agontze" as the basis for the melody. The group Stellamara was inspired by Bulgarian music and culture, and several members of the band have studied Balkan music in depth. The song's lyrics have been interpreted in many different ways, with some suggesting that they refer to the historical experience of the Balkans, including political struggles and natural disasters. The use of the Bulgarian folk song and the mixed-language lyrics create a sense of universal appeal, drawing on themes and sounds that are recognizable across borders and cultures.
