Knight
T. Rex Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Night comes down just like a giant umbrella
Slows me down, got to get it together

Saxophone sage plays upon her doorstep
Evening's lies are dying all around him

Head of plumes and crimson ostrich feathers
8th Hussars' manners gush out of my bloodstream, my queen

Clad in drag of oriental beggar
Ju-ju beads holding me all together

Overall Meaning

In "Knight," T. Rex lead singer Marc Bolan contemplates the cover of night like a giant umbrella that slows him down, reminding him to get his thoughts in order. He recognizes the calming influence of the simple saxophone playing the sage melody on a doorstep. As he gazes outward on the evening landscape, false impressions and illusions are falling away, freeing him to see the reality of his surroundings.

Bolan's imagination takes hold as he sees himself in the role of a knight of the realm wearing the plumed helmet of the 8th Hussars, England's imperial cavalry regiment founded in 1693. He sings of the rush he feels from his highborn manners coursing through his veins, with his beloved queen by his side. He shifts focus to oriental mysticism, donning the beggar's robes adorned with Ju-ju beads that ostensibly help to keep him whole. The song's evocative imagery shows how Bolan's songwriting tapped into the cultural and spiritual changes of the late sixties and early seventies.
