I Always Wanna Die
The 1975 Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I bet you thought your life would change
But you're sat on a train again
Your memories are sceneries
For things you said but never really meant
You build it to a high to say goodbye
Because you're not the same as them
But your death, it won't happen to you
It happens to your family and your friends
I pretend

And I always wanna die
Sometimes
I always wanna die
Sometimes

You win, you lose, you sing the blues
There's no point in buying concrete shoes
I refuse

And I always wanna die
Sometimes
I always wanna die
Sometimes
I always wanna die

Oh, am I me through geography?
A face collapsed through entropy
I can hardly speak
And when I try, it's nothing but a squeak
On the video
Living room for small
If you can't survive, just try

And I always wanna die
Sometimes
I always wanna die

Always wanna die (always wanna die)
Always wanna die
And I always wanna die (always wanna die)
Always wanna die
Sometimes (sometimes)
Sometimes (sometimes)
I sometimes
Always wanna die (always wanna die)

Always wanna die (always wanna)
Sometimes

Overall Meaning

The 1975's song "I Always Wanna Die" speaks to feelings of despair and hopelessness, as well as the inevitability of death. The opening lines "I bet you thought your life would change, but you're sat on a train again" depict a sense of disappointment in life and the monotony that can come with it. The following lines "Your memories are sceneries, for things you said but never really meant" suggest the idea of not being true to oneself or one's desires and instead living a life defined by societal expectations.

The chorus, "And I always wanna die, sometimes. I always wanna die, sometimes" is a powerful statement that speaks to the stark contrast between wanting to keep living and feeling as though death would be a release from the struggles of life. This mental conflict is further explored in the lines "You win, you lose, you sing the blues, there's no point in buying concrete shoes. I refuse" which express the feeling of being trapped and helpless, but also refusing to let go of life altogether.

The later lines "Oh, am I me through geography? A face collapsed through entropy. I can hardly speak, and when I try, it's nothing but a squeak" speak to the idea of losing oneself and identity through time and the physical decay of the body. The video reference and "living room for small" line may suggest the way in which we try to capture and hold onto memories of ourselves or our loved ones, but ultimately they are fleeting and unable to preserve our true essence.

on Chocolate

Hey now, call it a spliff because I know that you will
Oh you bite your friends like chocolate
You said we go where nobody know
We got guns hidden under our petticoats
And we never gonna quit it, no
We're never gonna quit it, no

Now run run away from the boys in the blue
Oh my car smells like chocolate
And now I think about what you do
I think about what they say
I think about how to think
Pause it play, pause it play, pause it

Oh we go where nobody know
We've got guns hidden under our petticoats
And we're never gonna quit it, no
We're never gonna quit it, no

Yeah, we're dressed in black from head to toe
We've got guns hidden under our petticoats
And we're never gonna quit it, no
We're never gonna quit it, no

Now you're never gonna quit it
Now you're never gonna quit it
Now you're never gonna quit it
If you don't stop smoking it
Thats's what she said

She said we're dressed in black from head to toe
We've got guns hidden under our petticoats
And we're never gonna quit it, no
We're never gonna quit it, no

Hey now we're building up speed
As we're appoaching the hill
Oh my hair smells like chocolate
Hey now you say you're gonna quit it
But you're never gonna quit it
Go get it, go get it, go get it, go get it, go
Play cool

Oh you said
We go where nobody know
We've got guns hidden under our petticoats
And we're never gonna quit it, no
We're never gonna quit it, no

Yeah, we're dressed in black from head to toe
We've got guns hidden under our petticoats
And we're never gonna quit it, no
We're never gonna quit it, no

Well I think we better go
Seriously better go
I said the feds are here you know
Seriously better go
Well I think we better go
I said the feds are here you know
Said Rebecca better know
Seriously better go

We go where nobody know
We've got guns hidden under our petticoats
And we're never gonna quit it, no
We're never gonna quit it, no

Yeah, we're dressed in black from head to toe
