During the late 1960s, the band had numerous hits at or near the top of the US Billboard charts (including "Windy", "Cherish", "Never My Love" and "Along Comes Mary") and were the lead-off band at 1967's Monterey Pop Festival. They are known for intricate vocal harmonies by the band's multiple singers (a style said to be influenced by The Hi-Los and The Lettermen).

Their best-known lineup included Terry Kirkman (vocals, woodwind instruments), Russ Giguere (vocals, guitar), Jim Yester (rhythm and lead guitar), Jules Alexander (lead and rhythm guitar), Brian Cole (bass) and Ted Bluechel Jr (drums) (and later Larry Ramos, who replaced Jules in early 1967).

Since 2014, founding members Jim Yester and Jules Alexander have been leading the current line-up of the Association, which includes Bruce Pictor, Paul Holland, Del Ramos, and Jordan Cole.

There's many sounds that helped define the 60s: Motown, Muscle Shoals, beach music & The Wall Of Sound.

Phil Spector being a musical genius was so needed & this song is one example of that! This is such a legendary song that it really does transcend time.

I was 14 in 1963, having a ball, dancing to this song and all the other great songs back then. People weren’t hating on each other over politics, we were into our great music and enjoying each other’s company. When vaccines were produced for polio, and other diseases, everybody got them with no qualms about them. I’m happy that I grew up in this era, people were a lot happier back then. 👍🥰

They look so mature! Suits and ties for the guys and dresses, skirts and sweaters for the girls. No tattoos, torn-up jeans, hardware on the face or body parts hanging out - and no multi-colored hair. Boys were boys and girls were girls. They were NOT confused about their gender. Wow. I think we've regressed as a human species. Thanks for the videos. Good memories of the golden age of America - great time to be a young adult. Today - not even close.

Why does their clothing matter to you? I’m only a few years younger than they were and I could care less about the clothing. What stands out to me is that no black dancers were allowed. Yes, the dancers that WERE allowed in the studio were very good. It’s amazing that they could jitterbug so well. But when the show was still in Philadelphia, the dancers were segregated. It’s been widely reported that black dancers were turned away from the doors in Philly. The dancers were not integrated until the civil rights movement forced it. AB had to compete with Soul Train and other integrated dance shows after about 1965. I think these early segregated dance shows are nothing to be proud of.

A solid 1963 classic featuring LaLa Brooks on lead vocals -- still have the 45. Love the January 4, 1964 Bandstand clip as AB begins to bid its "so long" to Philly. Legend has it that Cher sang back-up vocal on this Spector masterpiece.

I've always loved this song. That Wall of Sound that brings you to the dance floor is genius! Some years later a young man named Shaun Cassidy would score a number one hit and gold record for his cover of this song. I suppose it was mostly for the early teen generation and to me it lacked that power the Crystals gave it. This song has dance-ability written all over it.
As for the Philly set up, I think I read an interview where one of the Philly regs. said after taking a break there would be a mad dash to position themselves at camera #__. I only noticed the front line camera and somewhere near the end of the song a short semi-overhead shot. They bounced off each other like pinballs!!
I was 9 nearly 10 when this show aired. Since I have an older sister, I do remember watching bits and pieces of the Philly shows, but my heart belongs in So.Cali. ❤ Thank you Aaron. Watching these clips is really taking me back to the days when I could play outside until the street lights came on!! Rock on Bandstanders!

Agree. Lots of the same dancers all the time, probably the producers wanted it, thought they were the best looking or best dancers and the kids were hoping to be discovered to go on to do something in the movies or modeling, etc. I think they were auditioning by the constant smiling and flirting with the camera but it's so fun to watch and they are very good looking, many of them.

Agreed, nothing tops the Crystals original. You never hear Shaun Cassidy's version unless you play it yourself. Saw him perform it on Bandstand, he said he was a big fan of Phil Spector's music. Ian Matthews scored a #96 hit with an a cappella version in 1972. Cassidy altered the lyrics to account for the gender switch but Matthews changed not a single word from the Crystals.

OMG absolutely love the hairdos on the girls. How many hours did it take to achieve those beautiful creations. All the boys look so neat and clean what a good looking bunch of kids . And such a nice change from today's styles which frankly are in the toilet. tattoos, body piercings, purple hair and all. I sure do miss the Elegance of yesteryear 👍

I'm from that era....we looked pretty classy! When you went to a school dance, that's just how we dressed. Now some people shop in their pajamas, pants on so low their underwear is exposed, etc. etc. Whatever happened to caring about how you look in public......pretty sad.

The thing about this style of dancing is that you had to coordinate your steps with your partner in mind while also keeping the rhythm. The kids today separate with their dancing and do their own thing which is easier and takes less ability!

I know right. I have the Phil Spector Wall Of Sound, and it's a Masterpiece. Phil Spector influenced alot of other folks. Besides Brian Wilson who was obsessed by him, he also influenced Michael Tretow who produced ABBA's Records and in the UK, he influenced Xenomania who are the UK's Hottest Songwriting Team. Because of them Cher got her Comeback Smash Believe which now has her having hit singles in every single decade since she started from the 1960's onward. They also gave Girls Aloud the most succesfull Group to come out of Reality TV 21 Top Tens, Four Number Ones and Six Platinum Albums.

I think it had its beginnings in the 1940's, called "Jitterbug" In the new - old fashioned way! Brought up to date by baby boomers after WWII. I miss those days too, when we would half run & half walk home from school so we could watch American Bandstand & dance & after that, The Mickey Mouse Club.

I am surprised that the couples are dancing " together " at this time. The Twist, The Watusi, The Mashed Potato, and The Hully-Gully were " apart " dances that were in vogue for up-tempo songs at this time.

@John E Barna - There would be some " fad dances " originating in 1963 & later. " Do The Jerk " by The Larks came out in 1965.

@YouCanDanceToit! 😀🤣😂 can you stand it!! Wasn't that great???!!! And did you notice they weren't running into each other? This is THE BEST!! Cameraman didn't have to work hard either. My 2 left feet sister couldn't do this to save her. Of course I was a little girl and could make my feet fly! She hated me. 🤪

Never danced like this with a guy cuz no guy in my class/school could dance like this. Always danced with my bestie even up through most of our high school reunions. 55 is coming up and I plan them.

Was Philly but interestingly not all gorgeous dark young men were Italian according to last names (Irish, Polish, etc) just like the population of large eastern cities. Beautiful eye candy for me!

So true, my mom used to tell my sister and me the same sort of things, then in her later years would say we were angels compared to the kids of today. Actually we were, we were too scared to do anything like they do now. The nuns hammered it into us in school and parents at home. There was no greater sin than a girl getting pregnant. Now all the celebrities have a baby first then include it in their wedding some time later. A lot of things have changed. Is it progress? I don't think so. It complicates everything. I did not think so at the time, but a little conformity and discipline is a good thing.

I was in 9th grade at St. Joes Prep (Philadelphia) . I remember running up the hill from the bus stop to get home and go down the basement and turn on American Bandstand". Parents would not allow a television in the "museum" living room.

Wasn't there a Beatle's song featured on Rate A Record? And didn't it receive a low score?... Just for kicks, I thought I'd add a little fun fact. The Beatle's very first single, Love Me Do, was released on 10-5-62. Coincidently, that was my 2nd birthday.

@YouCanDanceToit! During those days they had 3 people judge r-a-r (hence the 81 2/3 score) which sometimes gave the "mathematicians" headaches. I saw a montage clip of people being hilariously off in averaging the scores.

@oldies geek, “Please Please Me” was played on Record Review (before it was called Rate A Record) sometime around the Spring of ‘63 and scored an 81 2/3. “She Loves You” was also used on Record Review in Sept. of ‘63 scoring a 73.

Marty Balin, of the Jefferson Airplane, went to L.A. to see about signing the band with Spector. Spector behaved like a South American drug lord, and Balin just left. And this was early on, before Spector had murdered anyone.

@Johnnyc drums I read her book. Did you? I recommend it. Also read Brian Wilson’s autobiography. It tells how his dr kept him drugged up. He escaped with his future( current) wife .

I went to the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1961 and I chose the dormitory I wanted to live in because the kids in the rec room in the basement with watching Bandstand
That was Ann Emery Hall on Langdon Street.

The "Wall of Sound" was ceramic tile floor to ceiling. The studio musicians were the famous "Wrecking Crew". :)

Those kids never seemed to smile; it was as if they reported for duty and then went about it without even looking at one another. I thought dancing was supposed to be fun!

I have to give The Wrecking Crew their Props. They were next to The Funk Brothers (Motown), some of the best Session Musicians out there. I loved The Drummer which I believe is Hal Blaine. Benny Papa Zita Benjamin was also "Gangsta" when he played drums.

This looks like the Philadelphia set at the old WFIL studios at 52nd and Market Streets...My dad danced on Bob Horn years before.. Funny about this clip...My parents would meet the following month and marry that October....
