An alt-rock supergroup of sorts, The Backbeat Band came together for a brie… Read Full Bio ↴An alt-rock supergroup of sorts, The Backbeat Band came together for a brief moment in 1993-94 to record and promote the soundtrack to Backbeat, Iain Softley's 1994 film chronicling the Fab Four's pre-Beatlemania era in England and Hamburg. Consisting of Afghan Whigs vocalist Greg Dulli, R.E.M. bassist Mike Mills, Nirvana drummer Dave Grohl, Sonic Youth vocalist/guitarist Thurston Moore, Gumball guitarist (and prolific producer) Don Fleming, and Soul Asylum vocalist Dave Pirner, the Backbeat Band punctuated the steak-and-potato days of '90s alt-rock with a set of vibrant interpretations of songs the Beatles covered during performances in their pre-Brian Epstein leathers at grimy venues such as Liverpool's Cavern Club and Hamburg's Star Club. Recording the soundtrack's dozen numbers in 1993, the Backbeat Band played one confirmed "gig" during their time together: a blink-and-you-missed-it stage appearance at the MTV Movie Awards on June 10, 1994.

I love the movie so much that as soon as i got out of the theater, i went out and bought the soundtrack. Astrid was at one of the Los Angeles Beatlefests and she stated that it was pretty close to the truth. I even two of the songs and made a dancing video. Sadly, i am now having to sell the DVD along with most of my Beatles/ Rock Collection. Love IT

Ah, the internet; everyone is an expert about everything and is always pissed off. I loved this rendition. Raw, unpolished and yeah, a bit Hollywood because it is A MOVIE!!! Hollywood - makes - movies!! It's not a play or a documentary. The Beatles are so beloved that people treat them like the Dalai Lama. It's ok to cover The Beatles who covered Please Mr. Postman.

The reason why the music in this film was recorded by Grunge/Punk musicians is because the filmmakers wanted to portal the way the music the Beatles played then sounded to the audience of the time.

Basically the Beatles to the audience of the 1960s sounded like what punk and grunge sound like to us now. As the filmmakers stated the Beatles were the "punk of their day"

Easy, people. Nobody can sound or look exactly like the Beatles, especially in the early years. What this film does well is re-interpret a "raw" and totally unorthodox look, sound and feel (for the time) of a band that came off the streets of a poor backwater. They paid homage to American rock and blues, and later conquered the musical world. No, they're not the Beatles, but suspend reality . . . just get swept up in the story. Be at peace.

Theres so much wrong with the continuity, it's put me right off watching this film. The mop top hairstyles, 500/1, Duo Jet and 325 make this the Star Club in '62, by which time Stu was dead. The audience wouldn't have been frantic teenage girls either. For the real Beatles Hamburg experience read the time travel book available from Amazon,' Many years 'til now'.

This film is very inaccurate because no one screamed at early Beatles concerts! That did not happen until around about July 1963. When the media termed the craze Beatlemania. Before that the audience at their gigs were very quiet.

they're quite good actually. Also, I heard that the director wanted the songs in the movie to be faster and more "punk rock-ish" because that's the emotion evoked by rock and roll the first time they were heard. However the original sound of the songs might be too tame for the audience of the 90s to understand why the Beatles are considered new and rebellious. hence the faster arrangement.

@Siaran Rawak They are a cover band, if the guys you're looking at are the guys singing and playing, which I doubt. They're fine. This is just another person's idea of "I know! Ill make a movie about the Beatles because it's never been done before!" and they produce a script and they wind everyone up and raise money and the movie is made and it comes out and it sucks and it joins the graveyard of everyone since 1963 who ever wanted to make a buck off the Beatles and put out shit and people buy it because Beatle fans are morons who support terrible cover bands and "incredible soundalikes" while the rest of us just dig the music today, tomorrow, forever.

Jerry Kenney It was recorded by Grunge Musicians. Why? Because the filmmakers wanted to covert what the Beatles sound like to a very early 1960s audience. Basically what the Beatles were doing then in their early days is the eqiverlent of what punk is now.

If you listen to the Beatles Star Club album recorded in 1962 you can hear how punkish the Beatles were then. Especially on Shimmy Shimmy, Roll Over Beethoven and Long Tall Sally.

Quite familiar with that. My point is that the video is overproduced. It is not the music as much as the visuals. Punk nor the early Beatles were over produced. People didn’t act as self-absorbed back then as the actors in the video. That was before social media made everyone famous in their own minds.

This was garbage when I saw it when it came out and it's garbage now. Play the Beatles' version, it has John Lennon tearing up the lead vocal and Ringo Starr on drums and George and Paul singing backup instead of these generic Hollywood guys.
