Formed in Hawthorne, California in 1961, the original group comprised singer-musician-composer and bandleader Brian Wilson, his brothers Carl Wilson and Dennis Wilson, their cousin Mike Love, and friend Al Jardine. Wilson neighbor David Marks appeared on their first four albums and was a member from 1962 to 1963 as a temporary replacement for Jardine, who had left the group to pursue a career in dentistry.
On their first few studio albums, the group primarily played surf music, but this changed after 1964 as their songs became more sophisticated and autobiographical. The 1965 album Today! particularly represented this shift in sound. Bruce Johnston joined the group that same year. Session drummer Hal Blaine is quoted: "We all studied in conservatories; we were trained musicians. We thought it was a fluke at first, but then we realized Brian was writing these incredible songs. This was not just a young kid writing about high school and surfing."
Following their most esteemed work, Pet Sounds (1966), the band became symbols of psychedelic counterculture. The highly anticipated follow-up, Smile, was left unfinished, and Brian soon relinquished his creative hold on the group. A trilogy of lo-fi releases followed: Smiley Smile (1967), Wild Honey (1967), and Friends (1968). Brian would not be credited as a primary composer for any Beach Boys album until 1977's Love You, an album on the fringe of synth-pop, new wave, and punk.
In Brian's absence, the Beach Boys still managed to release music that was regarded favorably by fans and critics despite poor sales: Sunflower (1970) and Surf's Up (1971). South African musicians Blondie Chaplin and Ricky Fataar played and sang with the band on the next two albums: Carl & the Passions - So Tough (1972), and Holland (1973).
Many changes in both musical style and personnel have occurred in their sometimes-stormy career: Brian Wilson's mental illness and drug addiction; the deaths of Dennis Wilson in 1983 and Carl Wilson in 1998; and continuing legal battles among surviving members of the group. With the release of 1974's Endless Summer they became a more popular touring act, playing their greatest hits. They have recorded 36 Billboard Top 40 hits (including four number-one singles), have had over 100 million sales, and were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1988.

Here Comes The Night
The Beach Boys Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Feel like a natural man
My mind was mess until you brought happiness
Well, that's not hard to understand
When I'm through working, just fussing and cussing
I'll be there just as quick as I can
Here comes the night
Hold me, squeeze me (oh-oh)
Don't ever leave me (here come, here come)
Tell me I'm doing alright (here now, here comes the night)
(Oh, here comes the night)
Hold me, squeeze me (oh-oh)
Don't ever leave me (here come, here come)
Tell me I'm doing alright (here now, here comes the night)
(Oh, here comes the night)
Hold me, love me (oh-oh)
Ooh (here come, here come)
(Here now, here comes the night)
(Oh, here comes the night)
(Ooh)
I know livin' is takin' and givin'
Baby, I'm givin' you my best
One of these days, you know, I'm gonna go crazy
In the middle of your caress
When the day goes down, honey, I'll be around
Why don't you wear your pretty red dress?
Here comes the night
(Oh, here comes the night)
Hold me, squeeze me (oh-oh)
Don't ever leave me (here come, here come)
Tell me I'm doing alright (here now, here comes the night)
(Oh, here comes the night)
Hold me, squeeze me (oh-oh)
Don't ever leave me (here come, here come)
Tell me I'm doing alright (here now, here comes the night)
(Oh, here comes the night)
Hold me, love me (oh-oh)
Ooh (here come, here come)
(Here now, here comes the night)
(Oh, here comes the night)
(Ooh)
Every morning, our love is reborn
And it lives with me all day long
When things start a-changin', takes a little rearrangin'
But our love grows on and on
Stars that shine above are makin' you mine to love
It's never ever felt so strong
Here comes the night
(Oh, here comes the night)
Hold me, squeeze me (oh-oh)
Don't ever leave me (here come, here come)
Tell me I'm doing alright (here now, here comes the night)
(Oh, here comes the night)
Hold me, squeeze me (oh-oh)
Don't ever leave me (here come, here come)
Tell me I'm doing alright (here now, here comes the night)
(Oh, here comes the night)
Hold me, love me (oh-oh)
Ooh (here come, here come)
(Here now, here comes the night)
(Oh, here comes the night)
The Beach Boys's song "Here Comes the Night" is a love song that expresses gratitude for the presence of someone special in the singer's life. The first stanza expresses a sense of relief and contentment that the singer feels now that the person he loves is in his life. The lyrics "My heart was breaking/Till you started making me/Feel like a natural man" suggest that the singer was feeling incomplete and unhappy until his lover came along and made him feel more whole. He acknowledges that his mind was a "mess" before he found "happiness" with his lover, indicating that he was struggling emotionally before he found someone to love. He pledges his devotion and willingness to be there for his lover, saying he will be there "as quick as I can" when he is done with work.
The chorus of the song emphasizes the singer's desire for his lover's affection and reassurance. The lines "Hold me squeeze me don't ever leave me/Tell me I'm doin' alright/Hold me love me" indicate that the singer wants physical closeness and emotional support from his lover. He also recognizes that love requires effort and sacrifice, acknowledging that "Livin' is takin' and givin'" but promising to give his best in the relationship. The second stanza reinforces the idea that the singer's love for his partner is strong and enduring. He describes how their love "grows on and on" despite the challenges that life brings. He also acknowledges that he has never felt a love so intense before.

My heart was breakin'
I was heartbroken
Till you started making me
But then you came into my life
Feel like a natural man
And you made me feel like a whole person
My mind was mess
My thoughts were all over the place
Until you brought happiness
But your presence brought me joy
And that's not hard to understand
It's easy to see why you make me happy
When I'm through workin'
After a long day at work
Just fussin' and cussin'
When I'm just complaining
I'll be there just as quick as I can
I'll come to you as soon as I can
Hold me squeeze me don't ever leave me
Embrace me and stay with me forever
Tell me I'm doin' alright
Assure me that I'm doing well
Hold me love me ooooo
Show me affection and love
I know livin' is takin' and givin'
I understand that life involves giving and taking
Baby I'm givin' you my best
But I'm giving you my best effort
One of these days you know
Someday in the future
I'm gonna go crazy
I might lose control of my emotions
In the middle of your caress
When you're holding me close
When the day goes down
As the day comes to an end
Honey I'll be around
I'll still be by your side
Why don't you wear your pretty red dress
Why don't you dress up for me?
Every mornin' our love is reborn
Our love is renewed every day
And it lives with me all day long
And I carry our love with me throughout the day
Things start changin'
Things may change
Take as a little rearrangin'
Although it will just take some adjustment
But our love grows on and on
Our love continues to grow
Stars who shine in love
People who are deeply in love
Are making you mine to love
Have brought you into my life for me to love
I've never felt a love so strong
I have never experienced such a powerful love
