The doorman got a hundred just for holding the door open he'd shove hundreds into the pockets of the dealers and all the guys who ran the games, the bartender got a hundred just for keeping the ice cubes cold. Jimmy was one of the most feared guys in the city. He was first locked up at 11 and was doing hits for mob bosses at 16. Hits never bothered Jimmy it was business. But what Jimmy really loved to do, what he really loved to do was steal. I mean he actually enjoyed it. Jimmy was the type of guy who rooted for the bad guys in the movies. Jimmy was the city's biggest highjacker of booze, cigarettes, razor blades, shrimp and lobsters, (shrimp and lobsters were best.) Most of them were gimmes they gave them right up. They called him Jimmy the gent. And when the cops assigned a whole army to stop Jimmy what did he do? He made them partners. Truck drivers loved Jimmy. He tipped them off about their really good loads and of course everybody got a piece.

In 1956, this was our marching song at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas. By the time we finished basic training, we were the coolest squadron around, our Guideon singing the main lyrics and the rest of us filling in with "Doo Ah's, Doo Ah's". Every time I hear this song, it brings back great memories and a big smile.

I was born in 1959 and I grew up on this stuff. I learned all of this great music from my mama's 45s. I am now 56 yrs old and I have been playing the drums for over 40 years, and I play bass some and keys. I have written many songs in my life. Never made it big, and now I play drums in my church and I am happy. But my roots started with this song and many from the 50's.

I had the good fortune of seeing this group live in the 1980's. They still looked great-- I remember they all wore pink suits, and the singing and choreography was unbelievable. A real class act. And I think it was all still the original members.. I would think that by now most of the original members of these great groups have left us. Pretty soon all that will be left are the records. Fortunately, much of the music has been digitized and so will thrill future generations of fans (those who choose to seek it out). I grew up in the '70s but I chose to listen to doowop and vintage jazz. Kids today need to also know that they have choices and not just what's readily available in the form of today's "pop" music (I use the term "music" loosely!)

one of the main guys in this group is a guy named Harold Melvin, he later went on to develop the blue notes, and in this group was a guy named teddy Pendergrass, the blue notes gave teddy no recognition, so he split and went on his own, and became a giant in the disco era. teddy is king, his music lends so many great memories.

@Michael Medema Jimmy Burke could be seen on the regs all around Rockaway between B109th up into Belle Harbor. He had people in that area. This is the mid '70's. His adoptive family (parents) had a spot over by Stella Maris. The old school ways were still largely the way and obeyed. No flash, no pomp and circumstance or attention seeking like that disgrace John Gotti. People knew, but didn't talk, needed, but never had to ask. Is it true about drug dealers coming in like that scene in Sleepers with Bruno Kirby and Lilo B? Yep! You respected the grown ups or you got cracked. You respected the church or you got cracked. You were respectful to police but you don't know/didn't see. It wasn't all this greasyball, grimy, everyone getting over on each other crap that Hollywood always sold. Everyone knew who they were and most times, neighborhood people got a break on the points(vig) if they borrowed. I'm not trying to romanticize it nor am I trying to say that they were all wonderful human beings. All I'm saying is set of people flied right, weren't nosey, didn't start or cause problems and were good to their word, there was no problem to be had.

I'm here because of the absolutely classic Heroes of Rock and Roll presented by Jeff Bridges. I first saw it in 1981 and although only a tiny clip of this song was used, it totally struck a chord (heh) with me. There was just something about it.
And then a few years later, I saw Goodfellas...

Born in 1941; came of age in Brooklyn during the fabulous '50s. Never was there a better time nor more perfect age to have been alive. Looking back, every teenage day was a blast ... filled with joy, carefree friends, excitement, laughter, hot rods, pre-Pill girlfriends with messy lipstick and big hairdos, Alan Freed's R&R shows, and the constant refrain of blow-harmony and Doo-Wop in the background. What a glorious, civilized era it was! So grateful to have been there.

There are thousands of comments about this song, so I have to say this - The Cadillacs "Speedo" did come out in the 50's way before I was born, but it's a very cool, hip, and bangin' song. I'm glad they featured this in the Temptations movie, or I probably would have never heard of it.

"Speedo" was played on 77 WABC every day - 7 years after it topped the charts. In 4th Grade in North Jersey - my gym teacher called me "Mr. Earl" due to my hustle on the baseball field. I've never received a greater compliment in my life - nor one I felt less worthy of. Even at that tender age, we kids had major respect for "Mr. Earl". He was Top Cat.
