Only In America
The Drifters Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Only in America
Can a guy from anywhere
Go to sleep a pauper and wake up a millionaire

Only in America
Can a kid without a cent
Get a break and maybe grow up to be President
Only in America
Land of opportunity, yeah
Would a classy girl like you fall for a poor boy like me

Only in America
Can a kid who's washin' cars
Take a giant step and reach right up and touch the stars

Only in America
Could a dream like this come true
Could a guy like me start with nothing and end up with you

Only in America
Land of opportunity, yeah
Would a classy girl like you fall for a poor boy like me

Only in America (poor boy like me)
Only in America (only in America)
Only in America (only in America)
Only in America (only in America)

Only in America (only in America)
Only in America

Overall Meaning

The song "Only in America" by The Drifters is a celebration of the opportunities and dreams that are available in America. The lyrics are an ode to the American dream, as they illustrate the possibilities for people of all backgrounds to achieve success despite starting with nothing. The verses describe several scenarios, in which an individual's hard work and determination can lead to great success and recognition.

The first verse describes how someone can go to bed broke and wake up a millionaire in America. This idea represents the country's unlimited potential, where success is not limited to any particular demographic or social status. The second verse notes how even an underprivileged child can rise to become the President of the United States. This emphasis on equal opportunities for people of varying backgrounds extends to the chorus, where the singer suggests that a lowly car washer can reach for the stars and ultimately end up with a classy girl by his side.

The song's message is uplifting and optimistic, suggesting that through hard work and resilience, even the least privileged among us can achieve greatness. It paints a picture of America as a land of endless opportunity, where everyone has the chance to fulfill their deepest dreams.

I love this song by Jay and The Americans, this is the first time for me hearing the Drifters version, it's excellent, as most of the Drifters songs were.

@jimrankin7334

Jay & the Americans covered multiple Drifters songs. And clearly the Drifters inspired their style.

@Jim Rankin Yes Jim, imitation is the most sincere form of flattery, The Drifters were in a class of their own, i have many of their songs.

I’m with you 👍👍

Both versions are excellent. The original Drifters were an amazing group....I didn't know until a few years ago that The Drifters had done this.

You should look up the original lyrics. They reference Whites protesting against segregation. They were strong armed into changing the lyrics so radio stations would pick up the song. Then it was decided that African Americans could not sing about a child growing up to be president (since that right wasn't an option for them). Then the song was given to Jay and the Americans.
