Up In The Streets Of Harlem
The Drifters Lyrics

Up in the streets of Harlem, 110th and Park
That's where my baby waits for me, there in the dark
And I'm going, going, going, going, going, gonna tell her, tonight

Oh baby, don't wait for me I've got to go now
Baby, don't you see we've got to show now
That this world is much too slow now
Up in the streets of Harlem (Harlem), 100th, 25th
They say we always swing there what a lie what a myth
And I'm going, going, going, going, going, gonna tell her, tonight

Oh baby, don't turn your back on me I'm leaving
I've gotta fight for what I believe in
Don't want no more of hate and grievin'

You know that I love you, but I'm going away
From the streets, the streets of Harlem
From the streets, the streets of Harlem

Up in the streets of Harlem (Harlem), the tenements and the dirt
I see my baby's face there full of shame, full of hurt
And I'm going, going, going, going, going, gonna tell her, tonight

Oh baby, please let me go, my friends are dyin'
I can't sleep 'cause I know they're tryin'
To keep the little ones from cryin'

In the streets, the streets of Harlem

In the streets, the streets of Harlem
In the streets, the streets of Harlem

Overall Meaning

The Drifters' song, Up In The Streets Of Harlem, is a poignant depiction of the struggles and realities of life in Harlem during the 1960s. The song is about the singer's love for his partner who lives in Harlem, and how he is torn between staying with her and fighting for what he believes in, or leaving to join the civil rights movement.

The first verse describes how the singer's partner waits for him in the dark streets of Harlem. He expresses his desire to tell her something important, possibly his decision to leave. In the second verse, he pleads with his partner not to wait for him and to understand that they have a responsibility to fight for a better world. He is tired of the slow progress and wants to see more changes. He then reflects on the myth that Harlem is a place of constant celebration and swings, and how this couldn't be further from the truth. In the final verse, he talks about seeing his baby's face in Harlem, full of hurt and shame, and how he must leave to fight for a world where children do not suffer. He begs his partner to let him go and join the fight, as his friends are dying and he cannot sit idly by.

Up In The Streets Of Harlem is a powerful song that explores themes of love, social responsibility, and the struggle for justice. It is a reflection of the times and a call to action to create a world where everyone can thrive.
