Stylisticly, The Feeling have a debt of gratitude to the 70s, particularly bands such as 10cc, Supertramp, Pilot, Buggles, Queen, Stackridge, and other "progressive pop" acts. They are not averse to wearing their heart on their sleeve at gigs, playing covers of tunes by their favourite artists (such as 'Video Killed The Radio Star' by Buggles).
The Feeling have also followed the 'progressive' tradition of the concept album, with Twelve Stops and Home being a concept album about lost and unrequited love. The album starts with a relationship having just broken up, then follows through with the various emotions of the protagonist from hopeless dreamer to turning to drink for comfort, and finally slumping home.
When I Return
The Feeling Lyrics

They look just the same from the hills and the plains, yes it's true
You gave it all to a fool
How could I know how I'd fare without you
'Til I was gone, gone, gone?
When I return I will be better than, better than before
For I will have learned what your medicine is for
When I return
You and your face and your hair and your taste made me leave you
You and your all-giving smile all the while made me go
So I lived in the east, I lived in the west, I did it all without a penny
I lived twenty days in a hornet's nest and didn't get stung hardly any
But I still miss you
Ohh,
When I return I will be better than, better than before
For I may have learned what your medicine is for, oh
When I return
When I return
When I return I'll love you better than, better than before, oh
For now I have learned what your medicine is for
When I return
When I return
The Feeling's song "When I Return" tells the story of a person who travelled far away from the one they love just to see things from a new perspective. The lyrics convey a sense of regret for leaving and missing the person they left behind. The opening lines of the song, "I've travelled far just to look at the stars from a new place. They look just the same from the hills and the plains, yes it's true" highlights the theme of leaving home for a new experience only to realize that the most important things in life remain the same no matter where you are. This realization results in the person being better equipped to appreciate and love their significant other when they return.
The line "you gave it all to a fool, how could I know how I'd fare without you, 'til I was gone, gone, gone?" implies a sense of remorse for not recognizing the value of the person they left behind until they were already gone. The repetition of the word "gone" in this line reinforces the idea that they did not realize what they had until it was no longer there. However, the chorus presents a sense of optimism that the person will return a better version of themselves, having learned from their experiences and ready to appreciate their loved ones. The line "When I return I'll love you better than, better than before" shows that the person is willing to put in the effort to rebuild the relationship and make it stronger than ever before.
Overall, "When I Return" is a beautifully written song that captures the emotions of regret, longing, and hope. The lyrics express the idea that sometimes it takes leaving to appreciate what you have, but when you return, you will come back better equipped to love and cherish those around you.
