See The Sun
The Kooks Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Oh, you can have it all and wrap it in the world
You can have everything
You can have love and lots of other things
To make you think

But when it all comes down to you, girl
Yeah, no matter what you do
Take a look at yourself and realize
I've been good to you
I've been good to you

Oh, no, I didn't mean to say what I did say
All about lovers and how they should lay
Well, that was never for me to say and say
Don't you see now how I pay?

I see the sun rising
And all you see is it fall, fall, fall

So, come on up
Wasn't it you who said life was like a plastic cup?
To be used and then disposed of
Yeah, but that's no way to live a life like yours
Don't you see now how I try?

I see the sun rising
And all you see is it fall fall fall

For all the times I never never turned her way
And now she is there on someone else's arms

For all the times I never never turned her way
And now she is there on someone else's arms

For all the times I never never turned her way
And now she is there on someone else's arms

For all the times I never never turned her way
And now she is there on someone else's arms

Overall Meaning

The Kooks' "See the Sun" is a poignant reflection on a relationship that has ended. The opening lyrics suggest that the singer has provided everything possible to his lover, but it still isn't enough. The lines "Oh, you can have it all and wrap it in the world/You can have everything" imply that the lover has all the material possessions and love that they could want, but it's still not enough to make them happy. The subsequent lines "But when it all comes down to you, girl/Yeah, no matter what you do/Take a look at yourself and realize/I've been good to you/I've been good to you" suggest that the singer feels unappreciated for all his efforts.

The song takes an emotional turn as the singer apologizes for his previous statements, regretting his previous remarks about love and relationships- "Oh, no, I didn't mean to say what I did say/All about lovers and how they should lay/Well, that was never for me to say and say/Don't you see now how I pay?". He then encourages his ex-lover to see the positive things in life- "So, come on up/Wasn't it you who said life was like a plastic cup?/To be used and then disposed of?/Yeah, but that's no way to live a life like yours/Don't you see now how I try?".

The song's chorus- "I see the sun rising/And all you see is it fall, fall, fall" suggests that the singer has moved on from the relationship and is looking forward to the bright future, but the ex-lover can only see the darkness and downfall. The song ends on a poignant note, with the line "For all the times I never never turned her way/And now she is there on someone else's arms" suggesting that the singer has let go of the past and has accepted that his ex-lover is now happier with someone else.
