Morning Song
The Lumineers Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

The carbonation in my drink
The bubbles rise while my heart sinks
And I'll I tend to do is think of you

Was it easier to pack your bags
And book that flight to Paris as
The plane began to move that afternoon?
And when all the trains have pulled away
From local stations in decay
It's I who waits, it's you who's late again

And did you think of me when you made love
To him? Was it the same as us
Or was it different? It must have been

And all the pretty dames
They'll hug and kiss you all the same
And when they go, they're gone
They're not running late
Oh all, all the pretty dames

And the kids that you hold in your arms
With promises to protect them from harm
But they grow and they go
And you're all alone
All the kids, all the kids that you hold

And it's a shame that it ends this way
With nothing left to say
So just sit on your hands, while I walk away
It's a shame, it's a shame, it's a shame
When my hands begin to shake
When bitterness is all I taste
And my car won't stop
'Cause I cut the brakes
I hold on to a hope in my fate

Oh-oh, ah-ah, hey-hey
May you return to love one day
Well I hope and I pray

That you get what you gave
Oh-oh, ah-ah hey-hey

Overall Meaning

The Lumineers’s song “Morning Song” is a poignant ballad about heartbreak, loneliness, and regret. Lead singer Wesley Schultz’s raw vocals, backed by the band’s signature folksy sound, are particularly affecting. In the first verse, he describes how he simultaneously feels the joylessness of his life (“my heart sinks”) and the carbonation of his drink (“The carbonation in my drink, the bubbles rise while my heart sinks/ And I'll I tend to do is think of you”). The second verse alludes to a failed relationship with a partner who left him for Paris (“Was it easier to pack your bags / And book that flight to Paris as / The plane began to move that afternoon”). Schultz bemoans the fact that he is always waiting while she is always late, a signifier of the imbalance in their relationship.

The chorus begins with Schultz questioning whether his former partner thought of him while she was making love with another man (“And did you think of me when you made love / To him, was it the same as us / Or was it different, it must have been”). He then turns his attention to the “pretty dames,” who all act the same before leaving, leaving him to his loneliness. The final verse is particularly powerful, as Schultz sings about the fleeting nature of love and life, particularly childhood. He draws a contrast between the promises we make to our children when they are young to protect them from harm and the disappointment we feel when they grow up and leave us behind. Ultimately, the song ends on a note of uncertainty, as Schultz holds on to hope that he will one day find love again.

'Cause I cut the brakes
I'm the one who's made this terrible mistake, and in my desperation, I've cut my own brakes.

I hold on to a hope in my fate
Despite everything that's happened, I still hold on to hope that my destiny will take me somewhere better.

May you return to love one day
I hope that someday, you'll rediscover the magic of love and find happiness once again.

Well I hope and I pray
Though I have no control over your future, I still wish the best for you and keep you in my thoughts and prayers.

You get what you gave
I believe in the idea of karma, and I hope that whatever you put out into the world will eventually come back to you.

Oh oh ah ah hey hey
This is a signature Lumineers refrain, providing a catchy yet nonsensical musical break.
