Submarines
The Lumineers Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I believe submarines
Underneath deep blue seas
Saw the flags, Japanese
No one will believe me

Ran back to the town bar and
I told the people how
I had seen a submarine
And everyone laughed aloud

I did spy a periscope
Dead of night on the eastern coast
The police made them jokes
Told me I'd seen a ghost

Everyone thinks I'm a liar
No one knows the truth
If it was a bigger fire
I would be on the roof

Ships will rust in Baldwin Bay
(Let me go)
No one trusts what I say
(I don't know)
Oh my God, no one paid
(Attention)
Overnight my hair turned gray
(Oh oh oh)

In the end, it boils down to credibility
I had none, so I will die with the secrets of the sea

(Submarine)
(Can't find me)
Submarine, hey

(Submarine)

Overall Meaning

In the song Submarines by The Lumineers, the singer speaks of an incredible thing that they witnessed, but no one could ever believe them. The opening lines "I believe submarines, underneath deep blue seas, saw the flags, Japanese, no one will believe me," suggest that the singer has either seen Japanese submarines, or at least believes that submarines exist below the ocean's surface. The next verse goes on to describe how the singer ran back to their town and attempted to tell people what they saw, but everyone laughed at them. The use of the words "everyone" and "no one" suggest that the singer is truly alone in their knowledge.

The chorus "Ships will rust in Baldwin Bay, no one trusts what I say," indicates that the singer has become a sort of outcast in their town, and that their credibility has been completely destroyed. The final verse reveals the true meaning behind the song. The singer says that they will die with the secrets of the sea, implying that sometimes there are things in this world that cannot be explained or rationalized, and sometimes the truth exists even if it isn't believed.

Overall, The Lumineers paint a vivid and poignant picture of the pain of not being believed or listened to. The song alludes to the grieving and pain of feeling shut off from the world with one secret--one experience--that no one else can see or believe.

The ballast tanks of my heart just opened as my soul dove down into the briny deep of this awesome song.

I would like to give my own interpretation of this song.

I think this song reflects the lives of many people who live their lives waiting for something to come to them instead of going out and getting it.

We look back and think where did the time go, how did I end up where I am today in a sudden epiphany that we should have spent our lives looking for the proverbial submarines instead of just talking about them.

This is the lives of many these days told by schools, governments, media and simply those people in your lives that generally can't see the forest for the trees that there are no submarines, you're imagining things.

We're told things are generally intangible from an early age but if we take the time and make the effort to do instead of talk we can become the change that we want to see.

Lets chase submarines, don't watch them on the horizon because they aren't coming any closer to the shore.

The untold want, by life and land ne'er granted, Now, Voyager, sail thou forth, to seek and find. Walt Whitman

For those of you wondering, this song is about Wesley Shulz’s grandfather who claimed to have spotted submarines in a local body of water. The grandfather was known for telling tales but everyone laughed him off. He insisted until his death, & sure enough, a few years ago, reports were released that proved Wesley’s grandfather right all along.

@iszelannbenosa8688

that is sooo sad

@jordancedillo9815

It was a Japanese submarine too right? Where are the reports that said it was true, I never saw that!

@chuck_nazty

I don't know why but... all Lumineers song seem short to me. Maybe because I like them so much, they go by too fast.

@georgee1855

@nimprobable

They might appear short to you because they in fact are short.
