If You Want To Get To Heaven
The Ozark Mountain Daredevils Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I never read it in a book
I never saw it on a show
But I heard it in the alley
On a weird radio
If you want a drink of water
You got to get it from a well
If you want to get to heaven
You got to raise a little hell

I never felt it in my feet
I never felt it in my soul
But I heard it the alley
Now it's in my rock and roll
If you want to know a secret
You got to promise not to tell
If you want to get to heaven
You got to raise a little hell

I never thought it'd be so easy
I never thought it'd be so fun
But I heard it in the alley
Now I got it on the run
If you want to see an angel
You got to find it where it fell
If you want to get to heaven
You got to raise a little hell

If you want to get to heaven
If you want to get to heaven

If you want to get to heaven
If you want to get to heaven

Overall Meaning

The Ozark Mountain Daredevils's song "If You Want To Get To Heaven" speaks about the idea that in order to reach a higher place, such as heaven, a bit of rebellion and chaos may be needed. The lyrics describe the singer's personal experience of discovering this truth through the collective wisdom of people, but not through any conventional source, such as books or TV shows. The singer heard these ideas in the alley, conveyed through an odd radio- a metaphorical symbol of unapologetic rebellion and resistance.

The song also stresses the importance of not being a passive listener, but rather an active participant in the pursuit of the higher goal. The chorus of the song underlines the idea that just like one has to dig a well to get water, one has to make an effort and occasionally raise a little hell to get to heaven. It is not a question of being good or bad, but of having the courage to challenge oneself to become better.

Most people today have no idea of how great the music was in the 60’s and 70’s ✌🏽

@clubhouseme

@bitchinbob2045

Atta Boy.

@bmcadie6003

You are so right. When you hear some of the music today. It makes a person realize just how great the music from the 60s and 70s. Was and still is.

@deadreckoning6288

@Dr.Pepperdave

I remind people all the time that they are listening to music that is 50 years old...

This is another great example of how good the music was in this time period. These long-haired mountain boys were good. Very creative and tight.. A darn good band! Fun music with good sprirt. AND they were fun....

@CasperLCat

Tight, indeed ! All these 70s bands sounded AMAZING live. In fact, the records were just a recording of what they already were doing live; not something patched together in ProTools by a producer, today.

Note the audience is clapping in time and enjoying the music. Not a phone in sight. That’s how you enjoy live music!
