Trust Yourself
The Pietasters Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

If they're right
You'd better think about it
And if they're not
You'll have no regrets

What goes up
Must surely comes down
Yes I think it's time
For another round

Sleep walk for 42 weeks
Like diamonds, crazy from the heat
Wished them a whole lot of dirt
Isn't that what you had heard

You can't depend on nobody else

If you start
You'd better think about it
When you quit
You gotta smoke cigarettes

We've had the run around
And this is what I have found
Too many pages too sign
I doubt you're no friend of mine
Not going back on our words
In the end who did we hurt

You can't depend on nobody else
When you can't even trust yourself.

If they're right
You'd better think about it
And if they're not
You'll have no regrets

What goes up
Must surely comes down
Yes I think it's time
For another round

You can't depend on nobody else
When you can't even trust yourself.

Overall Meaning

The Pietasters' song Trust Yourself seems to be a heavy reflection about self-reliance and trust in one's own decisions. The chorus repeats twice, and it talks about the importance of trusting oneself, even when others are involved. It is important to note that the song is upbeat, and the lyrics are positive, despite the heavy reflection.

The first verse seems to say that there will always be people who will tell us what to do, and they may be right or wrong. Ultimately, it is up to us to decide what we believe and act on this belief. The second verse talks about starting something with conviction but quitting with uncertainty, which can lead to addiction. The bridge discusses how people can be unreliable, which is why it is essential to trust oneself entirely.

The chorus repeats, encouraging listeners to trust themselves despite the uncertainty that comes with life. The last verse talks about ultimately accepting the consequences of our actions, and that it is not worth going back on one's words to avoid this. In the end, it is important to trust oneself because it is impossible to depend on anyone else.

Dead

on Set Me Up

The song is about former DC mayor, Marion Barry.

On January 18, 1990, Barry was arrested with a former girlfriend, Hazel Diane Moore, in a sting operation at the Vista International Hotel by the FBI and D.C. police for crack cocaine use and possession. Moore was an FBI informant when she invited Barry to the hotel room and insisted that he smoke freebase cocaine before they had sex, while agents in another room watched on camera, waiting for Barry to accept her offer. During the videotaped arrest, Barry says of Moore, "Bitch set me up.”
