The band released one album, Do It Yourself, in 1997 and began work on a follow up (with Mark Heany replacing Watts as drummer), before splitting up due to musical differences during recording sessions in January 1999. The second album was never officially released, although it later surfaced as a bootleg.

The Seahorses Lyrics

She does her best to blow the cobwebs away
And if it's still light, maybe she'll skip breakfast
Hope that someone can throw a little stardust her way, yeah
Crossing the room the day after, night before nightmare
Pink blue eyes drink in the aftermath
The world's her oyster anything she chooses
Sixteen sweet Chablis sham kisses
Seventeen nothing's whispered in her ear
Eighteen attempts on her best pair of knickers
1999 was a hell of a year
She likes to rise early in the morning
She does her best to blow the cobwebs away
And if it's still light, maybe she'll skip breakfast
Hope that someone can throw a little stardust her way, yeah
That must have been a night to remember
Shame she forgot
The Seahorses's song 1999, sung by Chris Helme, is a contemplative and melancholic piece that reflects on the uncertainty and aimlessness of youth. The singer describes a young girl who rises early in the morning, trying to start fresh and clear out the "cobwebs". She appears to be looking for some guidance and direction in her life, hoping for someone to throw a "little stardust" her way.
The second verse describes the aftermath of a night of partying and indulgences. The girl wakes up with pink-blue eyes, taking in the chaos around her. She doesn't know where her shoes are and is left with only fragmented memories of the night before. The chorus repeats, indicating that this is a pattern for her, a way of coping with the confusion and uncertainties of adolescence.
The use of age (16, 17, and 18) highlights the transition from adolescence to adulthood, which is often experienced with confusion and a lack of direction. The final line, "1999 was a hell of a year," suggests that the year was important to the singer, perhaps indicative of a broader cultural shift at that time, or perhaps simply nostalgia for that period of his own life.
Overall, the song poignantly captures the confusion and yearning for direction and guidance that are so common during adolescence.
