Distant Doubloon
The View Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Blind Pew he covers you with colours of the night you'll never meet him in the carnival. Taggada takes the Jakeys for a ride.
And Long John Silver is one of the few that Robbie Stevenson could champion even though the man was fake made up the kind you'd never expect to shoot one of their inmates.

The horizontal stripes will lead you to the west
The vertical hill town huns will leave you own back with your tannadiction chest.

The weakest character in this chapter loves dairy, shadows never shone.
I never met a pretty creature who would crumble at the outcome of a cow,
How come you would tell me farmers never bow.
Metaphors are easy just to talk about it, growing up with spacers I can live without

Fifteen holes is never worth a stolen bike just waiting for a different cunt to say what to write.
There will never be a colour in the sea if you don't have no eyes to see so please don't dwell upon your wooden leg, your limp is boring me.

You see your wallpaper was red polluted with lesbian green.
Red was never your colour it was never your team.
Blue it never even crossed your mind because you never flew a flight,
Golden treasure left you blind.

Fifteen holes is never worth a stolen bike your just waiting for a different cunt to say what to write.

There will never be a colour in the sea if you have not eyes to see.
So don't dwell upon your wooden leg, your fucking limp is boring me.

Overall Meaning

The View's song Distant Doubloon is a tale about characters from Robert Louis Stevenson's infamous novel, Treasure Island. The opening verse is an allusion to Blind Pew, a legendary pirate described by Stevenson's character, Jim Hawkins, as a shadow of a man. The lyrics suggest that Pew has covered the singer in colours of the night to conceal his presence from others at the carnival, but they will never meet him. The next line is a reference to Taggada, a slang term for an Italian gangster who takes "jakeys," or drug addicts, for a ride. Then the chorus mentions Long John Silver, one of the few characters who Robbie Stevenson could champion even though he was fake - the kind of person you'd never expect to shoot one of their inmates.

The second verse is cryptic, filled with metaphorical imagery that's difficult to decipher. One interpretation is that the horizontal stripes lead to the west, which may be a reference to the direction of the setting sun. The vertical hill town huns mentioned may represent a group of ruthless bandits. The weakest character in this chapter loves dairy, shadows never shone suggests someone who's insignificant, and it's unlikely that their story would be remembered since they don't have any interesting qualities. The song then ends with another verse about the futility of chasing after material possessions like stolen bikes and treasure, concluding with the same repeated sentiment of the wooden leg being boring.

Outstanding tune

The 1st 50 seconds aint needed.  Reminds me of a Moody Blues album beginning.   But song is great arrangement.  Lyrics, oh so quirky and clever.  Kyle's voice here, is a bit  like the sound of Gilbert O'Sullivan's.
