The Man I Love
Thelonious Monk Lyrics

Someday he'll come along
The man I love
And he'll be big and strong
The man I love
And when he comes my way
I'll do my best to make him stay

He'll look at me and smile
I'll understand
Then in a little while
He'll take my hand
And though it seems absurd
I know we both won't say a word

Maybe I shall meet him Sunday
Maybe Monday, maybe not
Still I'm sure to meet him one day
Maybe Tuesday will be my good news day
He'll build a little home
That's meant for two
From which I'll never roam
Who would, would you
And so all else above
I'm dreaming of the man I love

There just isn't anyone like him. The notes he plays are an oxymoron, in that they feel almost jarringly wrong but they go down so smooth.

Monk actually plays the same notes as everyone else does - with added Monk. You can't play it his way, his vision was entirely his own.

Anyone familiar with Thelonius knows his music anytime you hear him.He has been "The Man"for a very long time and I thank you for playing this.

just for the record: The Man I Love was not recorded for "Underground" — but 3 years later in London, 15 november 1971, with Al McKibbon and Art Blakey, the last great session of Monk's life, issued by Black Lion as The London Collection, 3 LPs.

Aunt Betty

I was digging him while everyone else was into the Beatles. He makes such beautiful music.

Same with me. There was no comparison- he was way ahead. I was a teenager then and it affected me socially.

Joan Gerner

This is truly the greatest rendition of the classic The Man I Love. It is pure Monk
