Parmi ces messieurs,
Cette blonde aux bras nus,
Si nus qu'elle éternue,
Dans ses doigts, elle se mouche
Et pour s'rincer la bouche,
Elle commande un cognac,
Puis un autre cognac,
Je lui dis à l'oreille:
"T'es belle comme Diane de Poitiers,
Veux tu prendre la moitié
De mon lit si t'as sommeil ?"
Elle me répond, je cite:
"Il faut pas que tu t'excites,
Ce n'est pas c'que tu penses,
Je suis restée vieille France."
"C'est d'accord, je t'acceuille,
Moi je dors dans le fauteuil
En tout bien, tout honneur,
Comme un frère et une soeur,
Toi le lit, moi la banquette,
À la bonne franquette,
C'est d'accord pour ce soir,
Moi je dors dans la baignoire.
Certes, je ne suis pas un saint
Et quand la lumière s'eteint,
Je n'ai pas toujours dit non
Mais jm'en remet à Platon
Pour nous deux c'est plus sage,
Vu la difference d'âge,
Non ce soir pas d'folies
Chacun dans son lit.
Soit je ne suis pas un moine,
J'dissipe mon patrimoine
Ce s'rait mal me connaître,
Et les soirs de pleine lune,
J'en ai détournée plus d'une,
Mais faut pas rester dehors
Avec tout ces délinquants,
Sois tranquille, moi je dors
Sur le lit de camp.
Soit, j'suis pas un chérubin,
Faudrait que j'prenne un bain,
Que je rase sur mes joues
Cette barbe acajou,
Et mon linge n'est pas net,
Enfin, pour être honnête,
Ce matin dans le bus,
J'ai attrapé une puce.
Les nuits d'hiver sont longues
Dans ma baignoire oblongue,
Elles sont longues et frisquettes,
Surtout sur la banquette,
Le divan du séjour,
Le canapé d'velours,
Le fauteuil Louis-Phillipe.
À ch'val sur les principes!
C'est d'accord, je t'accueille,
Moi je dors dans le fauteuil
En tout bien, tout honneur,
Comme un frère et une soeur,
Toi le lit, moi la banquette,
À la bonne franquette,
C'est d'accord pour ce soir,
Moi je dors dans la baignoire."
The lyrics of Thomas Fersen's song Diane-de-Poitiers evoke a scene in which the singer finds himself in the company of a young woman with bare arms who orders double cognacs at a bar. Despite his suggestion that she share his bed for the night, she firmly reminds him that she still adheres to the old ways of French society. The singer then acquiesces to sleeping separately but with an air of defiant pride that he is not bound by convention. Throughout the song, the singer reveals bits and pieces about his character that suggest he is not entirely trustworthy or virtuous even as he tries to present himself as a sensible and responsible gentleman.
The lyrics of the song Diane-de-Poitiers can be interpreted in many ways, but they paint a picture of a man who believes he is above convention while simultaneously bemoaning his lack of luck and questionable character. The woman with whom he shares a cabaret seems to embody for him both the allure of society and the banality of a society that demands conformity. The singer's acquiescence to sleeping in the bathtub at the end of the song might suggest a sense of self-punishment, or it could be a defiant refusal to play by society's rules without actually being committed to any kind of statement. Overall, the lyrics suggest that the singer's persona is perhaps more complex than he initially presents.

Que fait donc en ce lieu,
What is this blonde woman with bare arms doing among these gentlemen?
Parmi ces messieurs,
Among these gentlemen
Cette blonde aux bras nus,
This blonde woman with bare arms
Si nus qu'elle éternue,
So bare that she sneezes
Dans ses doigts, elle se mouche
She blows her nose in her fingers
Et pour s'rincer la bouche,
And to rinse her mouth
Elle commande un cognac,
She orders a cognac
Puis un autre cognac,
Then another cognac
Je lui dis à l'oreille:
I whisper in her ear:
"T'es belle comme Diane de Poitiers,
"You're as beautiful as Diane de Poitiers,
Veux tu prendre la moitié
Do you want to share half
De mon lit si t'as sommeil ?"
Of my bed if you're sleepy?"
Elle me répond, je cite:
She responds, I quote:
"Il faut pas que tu t'excites,
"You shouldn't get excited,
Ce n'est pas c'que tu penses,
It's not what you think,
Je suis restée vieille France."
I'm from old France."
"C'est d'accord, je t'accueille,
"Agreed, I welcome you,
Moi je dors dans le fauteuil
I'll sleep in the armchair
En tout bien, tout honneur,
With all due respect,
Comme un frère et une soeur,
Like a brother and a sister,
Toi le lit, moi la banquette,
You in the bed, me on the couch,
À la bonne franquette,
In a friendly way,
C'est d'accord pour ce soir,
Agreed for tonight,
Moi je dors dans la baignoire."
I'll sleep in the bathtub."
Certes, je ne suis pas un saint
Certainly, I'm not a saint
Et quand la lumière s'eteint,
And when the lights go out,
Je n'ai pas toujours dit non
I don't always say no
Mais j'm'en remet à Platon
But I defer to Plato
Pour nous deux c'est plus sage,
It's wiser for both of us,
Vu la difference d'âge,
Given the age difference,
Non ce soir pas d'folies
No foolishness tonight
Chacun dans son lit."
Everyone in their own bed."
Soit je ne suis pas un moine,
Either way, I'm not a monk,
J'dissipe mon patrimoine
I squander my inheritance
Dans ce bar un peu glauque,
In this somewhat seedy bar,
Ma voix est dev'nue rauque
My voice has become hoarse
À la suite des abus
From the excesses
Mais ce soir j'ai rien bu,
But tonight I haven't had anything to drink,
Non, ce soir je suis strict,
No, tonight I'm being disciplined,
Le devoir me le dicte."
Duty dictates it."

Don't worry, I'll sleep
Sur le lit de camp."
On the camping cot."

Well, I'm not an angel,
Faudrait que j'prenne un bain,
I should take a bath,
Que je rase sur mes joues

This reddish beard,

This morning on the bus,
J'ai attrapé une puce."
I caught a flea."
Les nuits d'hiver sont longues

Like a brother and a sister,

À la bonne franquette,
In a friendly way,
C'est d'accord pour ce soir,
Agreed for tonight,
Moi je dors dans la baignoire."
I'll sleep in the bathtub."
