Take Me With You
Tori Amos Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

In and out on this same path that I followed for years
Can't I look around and ask how could we still end up here
I can't just hold tight
Wait for them to cut us to ribbons
If the sharpest thing where you come is a blade of grass

[Chorus]
Oh take me with you
I don't need shoes to follow
Bare feet running with you
Somewhere the rainbow ends my dear

These injuries
Don't you think we need a new referee
I can't let the ball drop
Boy I need some interference to shut them up

[Chorus]

Oh take me with you
Chase rabbits into their burrow
Bare feet running with you
Today even the rain can cut me up

Tears turn to steal and the wound never heals
In the darkness of November
Well the witch is in the tower
And the snake's in the bower
And the hunt goes on forever
Now the stake is there to burn
My fathers robe is torn between cross and Mother
With the blood on your hands come on
What you doin'?
I am fed up with this questioning.

[Chorus]

Oh take me with you
Chase rabbits into their burrow
Bare feet running with you today today

Oh take me with you
I don't need shoes to follow
Bare feet running with you
Today even the rain
Even the rain
Even the rain
Can cut me up

Take me with you

Take me with you

Overall Meaning

In "Take Me With You," Tori Amos sings about feeling stuck in a cycle of familiar patterns and never being able to break free from them. She questions why she keeps ending up in the same place despite trying to make changes. She doesn't want to just sit around and wait for things to change, but she doesn't know what to do. She wants someone to take her out of her current situation and run away with her to a place where they can start fresh. The references to the rain and the injuries suggest that she feels beaten down and hurt by her experiences, and she is no longer willing to tolerate them.

The chorus is the plea to take her with them. The line "I don't need shoes to follow/Bare feet running with you" emphasizes that she is ready to leave at any moment, no matter what the cost. The idea of running with someone and chasing rabbits into their burrows suggests that she wants to leave behind everything that is holding her back and start something new with someone who feels the same way.

The imagery of the snake in the bower, the witch in the tower, and the hunt that goes on forever represents the struggles that she is facing. She feels like she is constantly being hunted and someone is always trying to hurt her. The lyrics suggest that she is tired of living in fear and wants to escape. Overall, the song is about the desire to break free from a stagnant life and start fresh with someone who understands.

‘Take Me With You,’ was 16 years in the making, having been rediscovered by her engineer and husband, Mark Hawley.
“When we put it up on the boards they looked at me and said, “Well, all
it needs is a vocal.’ I said, ‘I can’t do that 16 years later,’” Amos recalls.
“I thought about it and the song really started to call me to it. After
48 hours, I could finally finish the lyric and record it.” NICE!!!!!

Thanks for sharing this. I'm glad that she did it, this my favorite song by her. She truly is out of this world, isn't she?

An utterly glorious song from Ms Amos, who has sung me through so many demons I can't even count them! :Caught a Lite Sneeze" actually saved my life in many ways after being violated as a gay guy who had just gone through a depressive-anxiety eating disorder and feeling that there was nothing left to live for. My Beloved Bubba died at the start of this year, and that was something else so far as the language of Desolation goes, but this is a song I keep coming back to along with "All of Me" by John Legend, which was our sacred song and played as my baby Boy was buried at the start of this year. Oh Universe, I nearly lost it! I am so completely grateful for Tori and would dearly love to hug her <3

I have come to understand that, much as "Gold Dust" is Tori's point of awakening, that she is the Rainbow itself for me in terms of this song. Yes, everyone must be stung by the barbs of reality, but we all must at the v least have something we believe in - whether it's the Faith my mother follows that I don't any more (long story!) or spirituality, or even just the hopeful belief that one person, community etc can only tolerate so much pain before enough is enough. I send infinite HUGS to you all <3 Find your own truth, and follow it to the letter - because when you stop representing the things you stand for, whatever they may be, that's when you fall. I hope NONE of you reach that devastating point and even if you do, listen to Tori's "Zero Point", or better, "Caught a Lite Sneeze" - it saved my spiritual life, and just may for you too <3 A place of rediscovering gravity from a zone of misperceptions xx
