When Mommy Kills You

What are you to (to do)
Lie under the sheets and dream of future days
When you can be away
And be free
When mommy tries to (kill you)
What are you to (to do)
That we can have such fun
Just wait and see
I don't wanna wait up for mom
She's got to bed with a different pa
I'm not sleepy, just you wait and see
When mommy tries to (kill you)
What are you to (to do)
Lie under the sheets and dream of future days
When you can be away
And be free
I don't wanna wait up for mom
She's got to bed with a different pa
I'm not sleepy, just you wait and see
Merrily, merrily, merrily
We all fall down
The lyrics to Ty Segall's song "When Mommy Kills You" evoke a sense of dark and disturbing emotions, exploring themes of childhood trauma and the desire for freedom. The repeated line "When mommy tries to (kill you), what are you to (do)" highlights the helplessness and confusion that arises when faced with such a traumatic situation. The song seems to depict a child who is trapped in a toxic relationship with their mother, potentially facing abuse or neglect.
The verses suggest an escape fantasy as a coping mechanism, with the child retreating under the sheets to dream of a future where they can be away from their harmful environment and experience freedom. The lines "Grab her hand, tell her she is the only one, that we can have such fun" could be interpreted as a desperate attempt by the child to please their mother, to pretend that everything is normal and happy in order to survive within their volatile household.
The chorus further reinforces the sense of trauma and the child's longing for escape. The line "I don't wanna wait up for mom, she's got to bed with a different pa" implies a fractured and unstable family situation, with the mother constantly seeking different partners. The final line "Merrily, merrily, merrily, we all fall down" adds an eerie twist, suggesting that the destructive cycle of the family dynamics is inevitable and inescapable.
Overall, "When Mommy Kills You" is a deeply introspective and unsettling song that sheds light on the complexities of dysfunctional family relationships, the impact of childhood trauma, and the longing for freedom and liberation.
