The two main influences on the band are the Beatles and Black Sabbath, and keyboardist Josh Silver has expressed a love of Pink Floyd--evidence of which can be heard in the atmospherics of his production techniques.
The band arose from the ashes of the band Carnivore and gained popularity with their songs "Black No. 1" and "Christian Woman" from the Bloody Kisses album. The album was the first in Roadrunner Records' catalog to go both gold and platinum. They have successfully toured with Pantera, Life of Agony, and dozens of other established and up-and-coming bands, as well as taking part in Ozzfest. The band had VHS and DVD documentary releases in addition to their CD releases and contributions to movie soundtracks and compilations.
Steele died of sepsis caused by diverticulitis (initially reported as heart failure) on April 14 2010 at the age of 48.

Black No
Type O Negative Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
She likes the dark
On her milk white neck
The Devil's mark
It's all Hallows Eve
The moon is full
Will she trick or treat
I bet she will
She's got a date at midnight
With Nosferatu
Oh baby, Lilly Munster
Ain't got nothing on you
Well when I called her evil
She just laughed
And cast that spell on me
Boo Bitch Craft
Yeah you wanna go out 'cause it's raining and blowing
You can't go out 'cause your roots are showing
Dye em black
Black number one
Little wolf skin boots
And clove cigarettes
An erotic funeral
For witch she's dressed
Her perfume smells like
Burning leaves
Everyday is Halloween
Loving you was like loving the dead
The lyrics to Type O Negative's classic song Black No.1 are heavily steeped in gothic and horror imagery. The song begins by portraying a woman who is in love with herself and is drawn to the darkness. The Devil's mark on her neck hints at something mysterious and sinister about her persona. Halloween is around the corner and the moon is full, and it seems that the woman is prepared to trick-or-treat. However, the lyrics take a more supernatural turn when it is revealed that the woman has a date with Nosferatu, a classic monster of horror movies, at midnight. The song then takes on a more playful turn when the lyrics mock the singer's goth fashion and rituals, suggesting that she is not truly evil but just playing a role. The lyrics about dyeing hair black and wearing wolf skin boots and clove cigarettes are all part of the goth subculture's aesthetic, as is the idea of an "erotic funeral."
Overall, the song seems to be a playful tribute to goth subculture and horror movies. The lyrics mix humor and darkness, with references to witches, vampires, and other classic monsters. The singer is portrayed as a femme fatale with mysterious powers, but the lyrics also suggest she is somewhat self-conscious and performative in her goth identity. The song's epic guitar riff and Peter Steele's baritone vocals give it a distinctively gothic feel, making it a classic of the genre.

Not underrated it took a certain group of grunge and Early goth listeners to Remember this such as myself, most modern Goth bands took there influence from this EPIC band
@Jerseyboondocks
Peter didn't like it to be called Goth. I know it does seem like it is but Peter was not a "goth"
He and the other members said they considered themselves just some dudes from Brooklyn who played doom type metal. Or something similar he said. They mentioned many times how they are not Goths.
They are a metal band
