Yes, and not just on “The Way It Is.” Hornsby’s intros to “Every Little Kiss” and “Long Valley Road” are epic, and you could toss in “Mandolin Rain”—including the bluegrass version—in with those, and I would perhaps add the opening bars of “Harbor Lights” and “Dreamland,” as well. But Hornsby’s great intros aren’t just limited to his own recordings—check out his intros for Bonnie Raitt’s “I Can’t Make You Love Me” and Don Henley’s “The End of the Innocence.” He is a master.

I used to see Tom Scholz figure skating in the Boston area. I played hockey so I was at the rink quite a bit. One time they were playing Third Stage during a public session, then when the session was over I saw him and his wife (GF?) coming in. He had rented the ice for the next hour. I mentioned they had just played his album, and he got a kick out of it. Very down to Earth dude.

I can’t conceive of why Ray Manzarek’s intro to LA Woman did not make the list. It is evocative, imaginative and a perfect introduction to Morrison’s voice.

While it wasn’t complicated, the keyboard opening I remember most was by Three Dog Night at Saratoga Performing Arts Center in the early 70s. The opening chord to “Eli’s Coming” actually vibrated the lawn we were sitting on. I’ll never forget it.

I think he's intimidated by some of them, they're naturally & culturally alien to him, though he wont admit it. He's not a man especially concerned with lyrics anyway, but when to his ears bands are musically and lyrically weird sounding, he avoids them. So don't expect much classic Tull or Genesis, cos Dance on a Volcano is as adventurous as he gets. Its a pity, he obviously grew up with Zeppelin and the Beatles, so he gets them, but maybe he should reach out and spend the time getting to know other gems of the period......

Surely Bach's Toccata and Fugue in D minor has the greatest introduction of them all. Its opening sequence are dramatic and engaging, and instantly recognizable. Toccata and Fugue is also a piece of music that has been brought into the pop rock sphere on numerous occasions, attesting to its timeless quality. It gets my vote anyway. By the way, did you know that the introduction to Whiter Shade of Pale was based on Bach's Air on the G String?

You might also have a listen to Mess Around by Ray Charles (1953), for a brilliant intro that isn't part of post 1960 pop/rock.

I agree with you on Bach’s Toccata and Fugue in D minor - it absolutely grabs your brain and spins it. As for Whiter Shade of Pale, there’s been much discussion about whether it derived from Air, but I think the consensus is that it’s not. Hard to tell - there’s always influence, even subconsciously - in creating music. Regardless, Whiter Shade of Pale also grabs me. It’s wonderful.

There's a certain irony to the Queen one as Brian May produced a record by "Bad News" a horrible metal band put-on which had all the members of The Young Ones from Britain. They 'covered' the song that Les played out of key, and it is actually up on Youtube, if you need to hunt it down. Brian May played the solo on it pretty much the way Les did here.

Great list, Rick! I was really shocked you didn’t add a-ha take on me. That Hass to be one of the most recognizable keyboard parts I’ve ever heard. At least it’s iconic from my day. But so was Lincoln Parks in the end lol Nonetheless, those were all fantastic choices.

Styx not getting enough love again! “Come Sail Away” beats out some of these intros in my opinion, and “Renegade” should’ve been on the best vocal intros list. Super underrated

Is there gonna be a separate video on organ intros?
Because if not, Uriah Heep's "July Morning" should absolutely be on this. Ken Hensley is legendary, and that organ intro is iconic. Definitely more well known than a whole bunch of others on this list as well.

I would love to see and hear a video with the two of you discussing, laughing, figuring it out and talking shop. A behind the scenes video if you will. For me the greatest intro on keyboard and Guitar. Well just the greatest intro ever is "Shine on you crazy Diamond" by Pink Floyd. It's just a cascade of beautiful sounds that hypnotises and brings you slowly into one of the greatest Rock songs ever written.

You could of also had Us & them and Great gig in the Sky by the Genius that was Richard Wright. After all they did both grace one of the biggest selling albums of all time.

Great collection. I was waiting for California Girls, one of Brian Wilson's most beautiful intros. And I wonder how many of you would know Werewolf by Five Man Electrical Band, maybe an obscure Canadian Band, but what a chilling opening. And my fave seems to have been knocked out in favour of Baba O-Riley; I'd go for Won't Get Fooled Again for sure, even if there's an opening A on gtr with it. It was innovative, it's long, it's catchy, distinctive, moving, moody, ominous, suspensful, played in analog by another world-great guitarist...so many attributes of greatness. I'd say it still counts, hands down, and I could listen to that song for a thousand years

I wish Styx got some mentions, they're a fantastic band. Dennis DeYoung's keyboards have been the opener to many of their songs and arguably even the best part of a handful. Lady and Come Sail Away, to name a couple, are some of the best examples.

Both have very beautiful intros. They were my first musical interest when I was young (paradise theater era, was 3/4 years old). As soon as I learned how to work the stereo components my brother let me keep the cassette tape 😊. I hope they tour again, really want to see them live.

@Marie Perry Lucky lucky, I grew up listening to The Cars and similar bands, which I still love, but only recently in this past year I delved into Styx, my now favorite band. Some of the tracks from their new album are already some of my overall favorites. I also hope they tour again soon, I have to see them play live someday.
