In 2004, the band achieved commercial success with their debut album, Contraband. Despite positive reviews, some critics initially described Velvet Revolver as a mere combination of Stone Temple Pilots and Guns N'Roses, and criticizing them for a "disconnection" between Weiland and the rest of the band. With their single "Slither", they won the 2005 Grammy Award for Best Hard Rock Performance. The band released Libertad in 2007, driven by the release of the single "She Builds Quick Machines", and embarked on a tour with Alice in Chains.
In April 2008, Weiland was fired from Velvet Revolver and reunited with Stone Temple Pilots. Velvet Revolver was put on indefinite hiatus and in November of that year, requested to be released by their record label RCA Records to allow themselves "complete freedom to go through whatever process it would take to accomplish" replacing Weiland.
Although Velvet Revolver worked on new material and auditioned new singers following Scott Weiland's departure, the band has not released any new material and only performed publicly once since 2008, when they reunited with Weiland for a one-off reunion show on January 12, 2012, at a benefit concert. This proved to be their last performance together before Weiland's death on December 3, 2015. Slash and McKagan later rejoined Guns N' Roses in 2016. On December 3, 2015, Weiland was found dead on his tour bus around 9 pm, one day before he was to perform in Minnesota with his band the Wildabouts, which ended the possible reunion. Both Slash and McKagan rejoined Guns N' Roses in 2016.

Got a fever, fever, fever in your thighs
In your thighs
Mary, Mary, Mary by my side
Got a Tommy glove - the kind you cannot buy
Cannot buy
My baby knows the walk, you see her come for miles
Come for miles
Want to find out what you're saying
Want to play the games you're playing
[Chorus:]
Mary, Mary on my mind
Oh, get back, sugar baby
Mary, Mary on my mind
Oh, get back, sugar baby
Mary, Mary on my mind, oh
A modern lover of the modern kind
When we close the door, we're never out of time
Out of time
Black hair, red lips, brown eyes
Can't tell how it feels that you're mine, all mine
Mine, all mine
Want to find out what you're saying
Want to play the games you're playing
[Chorus]
Baby, baby, baby's on my mind
When we close the door, we're never out of time
Out of time
I want to play the games you're playing
Mary, Mary on my mind
Oh, get back, sugar baby
Mary, Mary on my mind
Oh, get back, sugar baby
Mary, Mary on my mind
Oh, get back, sugar baby
Mary, Mary on my mind
Oh, get back, sugar baby
Mary, Mary on my mind, oh
Come on down, now
Get on down, now
Come on down, now
Come on down, now
Get on down, now
Come on down, now
Get on down, now
Get on down, get on down, get on down, get on down
Come on down, now
Get on down, now
Come on down, get on down, get on down, get on down, get on down
The lyrics of Velvet Revolver's "Mary Mary" paint a picture of a confident and stylish woman, who captivates the attention of the singer. The first verse describes her physicality, her gaze, and her presence in a way that indicates how she exudes sexuality and power. The second verse delves deeper, highlighting her details that seem to add up to her overall allure, with vivid descriptions of her hair, lips, and eyes. The chorus repeats the singer's infatuation with her, with the line “Mary, Mary on my mind," serving as a refrain that heightens the song's showcase of the woman's presence. The overall vibe of the song is sensual and provocative, with an emphasis on how the person being sung about almost seems supernatural in their impact on the singer.
Overall, the song is a celebration of the power of sexual attraction and the confidence that can come from the right partner. It is likely that "Mary" is a metaphorical figure, rather than a specific person, with the lyrics serving as a showcase of the particular qualities that are attractive to the singer. Ultimately, the song brings to life the essence of what it means to be mesmerized by someone, and the feelings of being in thrall to their power.
