Gary Oldman is indeed the only other male actor on Daniel Day-Lewis’s level. I also want to put Meryl Streep in this category, especially for earlier roles like Sophie’s Choice. But Streep is “merely” amazing, while Day-Lewis the man is so NOT THERE that’s it’s almost disturbing, as well as exhilarating.

I almost feel that Day-Lewis is doing something improper, that I shouldn’t be watching. As if humans aren’t supposed to lose their real selves to this degree, and that he’s crossing a boundary into something beyond what properly pertains to acting as a profession.

I know how quaint a word like “proper” sounds these days. But “propre” in French, its derivation, means that which is one’s own, what belongs to me by virtue of being myself. I really think Day-Lewis rids himself of so much of this, and takes into himself that which is not “properly” his own, that it might actually be the right word to use.

I believe he himself has said it can take him years to “lose” a character he’s taken on, and that he takes so few roles because of what this level of immersion in the psyche of another person costs him in his life as Daniel Day-Lewis the man.

A more primitive culture would surely have burned him at the stake for practicing sorcery !

He's making them "as a peach" -- those who walk by his little shoe shoppe peer in, and rumor has it, they now see a giant man-peach with arms, hammering away on soles -- after several years of this, one patron finally gathered the nerve to walk into DDL's quaint little shoe shoppe and ask the all important question -- WHY? Daniel, without so much as looking up, seamlessly replied: "I always wanted to do real work, meaningful work, work with sole, so finally I decided to become a Peach Cobbler."

His ability to disappear into a character is so connected to his voice. This is why actors like Pacino or De Niro (though I love both) always feel like they’re playing slightly altered versions of themselves, whereas Daniel is virtually invisible.

@jerem james Nah... Love the guy, but haven't seen him be lost in a roll to that level, i mean in a way being you with no make up and costumes and still be different enough to be recognizing one roll from another is a hard thing to do. Early Pacino-DeNiro did it, so does McConaughey.
Yes, i must say, i did, it was bald M.McConaughey. The only times i got blown away by an actor using make up to transform is Ledger as Joker, but the one time i remember actually not recognizing the actor, was only with D.Hoffman as captain Hook.
M.McCounaghey was solid in Reign of fire, as always and the movies is cool AF. They could of made a series out of it by now.

George Clooney is George Clooney in every movie, as is every other "actor" in Hollywood. Their identity transcends the characters they are supposed to be portaying.
Not one of Lewis's characters bleeds over into the other. They are all quite distinct from one another and the movie is about the character and the story... not Lewis himself.

I think there are plenty of actors that can play very different characters very well but many of them are just a bit too recognizable even if their personalities and voices are quite different. Like on the surface level Leonardo DiCaprio is very different in Inception vs Django Unchained, but he’s completely recognizable in both films. The same is true of Brad Pitt in Fight Club vs Inglorious Bastards. There’s no question they are great actors in great roles, but the vast physical changes Daniel Day Lewis goes through in manor and voice makes him incredibly versatile.

Easily the best actor of our time. I never saw any actor before him that made me think "THAT is the greatest actor ever" . There Will Be Blood, and Gangs of New York alone are incredible. He is right about the voice being key to the character, but also his eyes. He has different expressions, and you can really see that he is being a different person when he acts. Very impressive.

If it's about voice, eye expression and becoming a different person, Heath Ledger had one of the best acting moments in movie history. Don't forget Anthony Hopkins, both these strong contenders to that title. Ledger wasn't able to prove further if he could make it, but Anthony Hopkins has proven it several times, like in "Titus".

There Will Be Blood was ridiculous, over the top and psychologically unbelievable. I really liked the novel (Oil!), but the movie simply trashes it. What a misdirection of talent. Just the title alone is a huge cliché. Gangs were good, though.

If you've ever worked on set, and really watched an actor you'll know. There are actors who act because they love fame, (narcissistic) others who want to act, but don't understand how to get there to be convincing, and then there's actors who want to act because they are genuinely interested in people, in knowing why somebody is who they are. They do it because, they not only want to know others, but also know themselves. Good camera people are also like this. They watch, to understand. They take the picture a certain way to express what they are seeing.

I've worked in camera for 23 years. Never worked with Daniel but I can see he is an explorer. He's objective and doesn't judge. This is the key.

Phillip Seymour Hoffman would be my only rival to those two. PSH in Along Came Polly was one of the funniest characters. But the range to go from that to Capote and any number of other roles, it's just absurd what he did.

He’s the greatest. He’s not just methodically embodying the part to be believable, but he’s also investigating the character through the encapsulation by the actor because the character is carefully hand picked for the fact that it is usually a reflection of his subconscious. His parts were already him before he acted them out. That’s the trick revealed.

For me he's the most gifted and technically accomplished film actor of his or multiple generations. His ability, as you quite rightly point out, put him in a very small pool. This innate and well practiced talent has also let him choose roles carefully. Each one is almost designed to show his considerable range. Very few, if any, actors can accomplish this.

For me, he seems so damn genuine as any character he plays. He’s in no rush to, “deliver his lines”. He IS that character who is speaking, naturally. There are no, “lines”. In that sense, he’s not afraid to take his time and while that might come off as slow-paced or even boring, if acted by anyone else…he pulls you in with it.

There Will Be Blood is one of my top five favorite movies because of his role in that.

Daniel Day Lewis is so good he's regarded as the greatest living actor and I didn't even know what he looked like until last year. I've seen most of the films in your video too (I watch films for the films, not for who's in them - I don't even check, most of the time)
I honestly could have been talking to him in a pub for hours, he could have told me his name was Daniel, and I STILL wouldn't have known who he was. He's a complete anomaly of stardom. It's utterly remarkable.

He is Irish so the Irish accent isint hard for him, even the more difficult northern brogue, its a underlying ferocity in his Characters that's simmers away with all his nuances and as you said breathing and the different speed he talks at according to the manner he's projecting,a brilliant actor and I think he's won the most Oscars for one actor, its a pity we haven't seen him in more films but I believe he's extremely particular, and he's retired it's said, but maybe would do a role he liked.

He truly is one of the all time greats. He gives amazing performances in everything. He one of the few actors who seem to act because they love it, and not for the attention of fame. He doesn't pander to an audience, he gives his best. It's a shame he's retired from acting. But then again, it's probably a good thing considering the state of Hollywood right now.

You’re just too slow to appreciate profound, nuanced films, stick to watching movies from Michael Bay or Zack Snyder. Almost all actors have scripts sent to them which they read and then decide whether they want to be in the film. Daniel Day Lewis gets sent very few scripts because the industry knows he won't even consider most roles. He's flipped Hollywood to such a degree they're hesitant to ask him to be in something just in case he refuses.

Paul Thomas Anderson is, in my opinion, the greatest living filmmaker. Lewis obviously recognizes his talent.

4:45 Daniel Day Lewis' father was born in Ireland, and apparently he traveled a lot in Ireland in his childhood, while also spending a lot of time there later (he is an Irish citizen as well as British), so even though "an Irish accent is not an easy thing to pull off" for someone like Leonardo DiCaprio, it is not that impressive for Daniel Day Lewis to be able to pull it off.

I feel the strangest sense of alienation from what I'm looking at, very similar to cognitive dissonance, when I see Daniel Day-Lewis in interviews just behaving as he does in the real world. It's a struggle to draw a solid connection between him as a person and the characters he has portrayed.

I feel it's important to point out that this man isn't extraordinary because he has a lot of talent, I see a lot of people that say that about him and other actors or artists. It is so important to distinguish talent, which is what people have from childhood or develop naturally with little effort, and what Daniel Day-Lewis has is skill that took a very long time and a lot of hard work to cultivate. While I'm sure he started with natural talent, to claim that's what got him where he is robs him of recognition for the countless hours that go into performances like those he gave.

Despite he won several Oscars, I still believe that he's underrated actor compared to Pacino or De Niro or Clooney who received tremendous fame worldwide. In my country, either nobody knows him at all or some know him from well known work like the last of the mohicans. They even didn't recognize him in gangs of new york. But everybody knows Pacino or Pitt in a blink of an eye.

Man, if he didn't retire he would have been an amazing voice actor. He would have made buck in the anime dub industry :))) Not many great actors have a great time voice acting, it's incredibly demanding on your chords, but i think he would have pulled it off beautifully

Voice acting seems like a logical next step for him. At the very least, it would keep him from endangering his health and safety with the kinds of method stunts he pulled for My Left Foot, The Last of the Mohicans, or Gangs of New York.

What a great docco. Thanks man! He is a true titan of the craft. I agree with you; you really don't see Daniel in any of his roles. He WAS Bill the Butcher. Remarkable guy. His incredibly sensitive handling of disability in My Left Foot is not oft discussed. I'm sure most actors would be mortified by the burden of that and would run to the hills.

Definitely one of the pillars of modern acting. Love your thoughts about how it’s almost unnatural how deep he goes into character. I feel this strongly in my own training philosophy. I want to achieve that level of character so badly, but I also worry about losing the essence of myself. That level of method acting could quite possibly cause some level of multiple personality disorder.

All of my adult life I've been told that I have "a great voice". A few women, apparently, fell in love with me (or at least lusted) because of my voice. I took a voice course at a theatre school ("you should do something with your gift") and, during one exercise, I pretty much knocked a fellow student out of her chair. Weird. It's just what I sound like when I talk. I got a regular job, and now have a regular pension!

My favorite acting roles are Leo in The Departed. The therapist scene and the scene under the bridge when Marky Mark punches him are amazing. And Christian Bale in American Psycho. Happy that films getting attention, even if its because of megachad memes

For my entire childhood and teens, I never realised that I had seen Butcher Bill in a movie that my parents watched a number of times on VHS in the very early 90s. The movie was My Left Foot and going back to it reveals the kernel of genius that is DDL today. Craftsmanship is the only word that comes close to how he seems to achieve what he does.

Thank you for posting this. Daniel Day Lewis in my opinion has to be one of the best actors out there. You're totally right....there is no trace of Daniel Day Lewis in any of the characters he plays. When I see other so called great actors in various films....sometimes they seem as if they are playing exactly the same character they played in their last film.

Wasn't until seeing this video how many roles I've seen Daniel in without realizing. It does help that he looks so different in whatever beard and hairstyle he has, but the acting of his voice truly makes him unrecognizable. Quite sets him apart from other actors that, while great, aren't setting themselves to "be the character" as much as a version of them as themselves.

Great video but I think his voice performance in Lincoln is actually more impressive. First, his high and soft pitch were the opposite of what people were expecting and it was very controversial just before the release of the movie. Yet after release it was praised. His calm and reassuring voice shows why he was so beloved and was able to forge a team of rivals to work with him. Yet in some scenes, the power comes forth impressively (ex. the "clothed in immense power" scene) where he commands the room, leaving no doubt who the President of the United States is.

Not enough actors truly reach the level of artistry DDL does! My instinct is that most get caught up in quantity, or fame, or money and lose the artistry(if they ever truly had it to begin with).
I'd bet the farm he would still be as prolific an actor even if paid nothing or given no acclaim!

more actors should act in the real world with the same respect for their characters as DDL does. He's never in interviews, only a few from his whole career, and this makes his characters so much more believable. A lot of actors today seem more interested in being celebrities than being actors.

Promoting films is part of your contract when you act in motion pictures. Many actors despise this process, yet they are forced to "act" as if they enjoy it. It's often not a desire for adulation that has movie actors go on talk shows or participate in press junkets. It's work, and one of the shittiest parts of the job.

Amazing video. And I have a confession to make.. there are shows, movies and series.. in which i prefer the synchronization into my own language, from the English original. Because.. there is such a thing, as a voice actor. And they stand in their studio and all they have to worry about.. is the message of their voice. And yeah, I am sorry, but the results can be beautiful.. and sometimes exceed the actual actor, who has to multitask every aspect of the role they are playing.

Wow, everytime I'm reminded of how amazing There Will Be Blood is I want to rewatch it again. The final scene between Daniel Day-Lewis and Paul Dano is so powerful. Both are acting their hearts out, it feels so real. It's possibly one of the best scenes in cinema, period.

This video popped up on my feed after I just watched Age of Innocence on a longhaul flight and I was mesmerised by his subtle, restrained performance. He seemed to be doing so little but the film was compelling and had me captivated.
