Une Larme
Yaniss Odua Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
In Yaniss Odua's song Une Larme, the chorus repeats the phrase "One tear fell when I saw her appear in front of me, her hands in blood and her back naked. I felt great anger within me. In cases like this, we would like to have all the rights." The song is a powerful commentary on the violence and abuse that young girls can face at the hands of their own fathers. The lyrics express disgust and a sense of helplessness at the idea that men can be so monstrous as to rape and pimp out their own daughters.
Odua's disgust with the anarchy in this situation is apparent in the third verse, which describes a father who wants to prostitute his 12-year-old girl to a select few friends. The singer of the song, who is narrating from their perspective, sees the girl as "well beaten." The chorus again appears to close the verse, with an invocation for the perpetrators to be "eliminated" and a general feeling of impotence and moral outrage from the singer.
The final verse of the song is a plea for awareness and compassion towards the plight of victims. Parents and bystanders who see this happening are criticized for standing idly by as the girls are abused. The last lines of the song provide a solemn hope that the cycle of abuse is broken, and that peace and harmony can prevail.
