September
Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Overall Meaning

The song "September" by Japanese singer Harada Tomoyo is a melancholic reflection on the changes that come with the end of summer and the arrival of autumn. The song opens with the image of the singer chasing after a train while wearing a mustard-colored shirt. She knows that it's a mistake to try and catch the train, but can't help herself. As she looks back, she sees the city, which has been colored in with crayons and even stained with tears. She's on her way to meet someone older than her, someone she knows she shouldn't be seeing. The chorus of the song, "September, and you've changed into autumn," is a powerful moment that captures the emotional state of the singer. As the summer sun fades, so too does her happiness.

The second verse of the song finds the singer in a state of loneliness, longing to see someone that she can't have. She wishes that she could tell this person to give back her heart, but her lips feel frozen and she can't bring herself to do it. The chorus repeats, highlighting the profound sense of loss that comes with the fall season. The final verse of the song finds the singer looking forward to the future, but also experiencing a sense of sadness. She won't be wearing the colorful clothes that she wore on the beach in Tricolor, and she'll never have the same kind of joy that she had in the summer again.
