Jar of Flies is the third studio EP by the American rock band Alice in Chains, released on January 25, 1994 through Columbia Records. It is the first EP in music history to debut at number one on the Billboard 200 Chart and was well-received by critics.
According to Staley, the title for the album came from a science experiment Cantrell conducted in third grade: "They gave him two jars full of flies. One of the jars they overfed, the other jar they underfed. The one they overfed flourished for a while, then all the flies died from overpopulation. The one they underfed had most of the flies survive all year. I guess there's a message in there somewhere. Evidently that experiment had a big impact on Jerry."
Jar of Flies included the singles "No Excuses" and "I Stay Away", both of which had accompanying music videos. "No Excuses", which was a number one single on the Mainstream Rock charts, was Alice in Chains' most successful radio song until 2009. The second single, "I Stay Away", reached number ten on the Mainstream Rock charts, while the final single "Don't Follow", reached number 25.[9] The final single released from the EP was a bold offering for a grunge-oriented band; a promo of the string instrumental "Whale & Wasp" was released as a promo-only single in January 1995. "I Stay Away" was nominated for the Grammy Award for Best Hard Rock Performance in 1995.

Alice in Chains Lyrics
Hey ah na na
Innocence is over
Hey ah na na, over
Hey ah na na
Ignorance is spoken
Hey ah na na, spoken
Hey ah na na
Confidence is broken
Hey ah na na broken
Hey ah na na
Sustenance is stolen
Hey ah na na, stolen
Hey ah na na
Arrogance is potent
Hey ah na na, potent, yeah
What I see is unreal
I've written my own part
Eat of the apple, so young
I'm crawling back to start
Hey ah na na
I repent tomorrow
Hey ah na na tomorrow
Hey ah na na
I suspend my sorrow
Hey ah na na
Sorrow, yeah
What I see is unreal
I've written my own part
Eat of the apple, so young
I'm crawling back to start
Hey ah na na
A romance is fallen
Hey ah na na fallen
Hey ah na na
Recommend you borrow
Hey ah na na, borrow, yeah
What I see is unreal
I've written my own part
Eat of the apple, so young
I'm crawling back to start
Hey ah na na

I always remember this song helping me through my youth when I felt broken... I was ignorant to broken then...
I lost my adored 20yr old son, Kyle on a Sunday morning...January 21, 2018.
Broken is dying with him & waiting to die again to be with him. Broken is watching his baby brother suffer, broken is seeing his father fall to his knees-Broken is our family...the strongest link in our chain just gone...tragically & suddenly! All this Love, so much love with nowhere to go-Broken!
Kyle, until I hold you again...I’ll navigate this life blindly as my eyes only look for you!
There is true heartbreak in this life and to anyone reading this, never take one day with the ones you love most for granted...Broken my family is but beautiful memories are the glue that keeps us going. Love to all who suffer with brokenness-you’re not alone!
Love,
Kyle’s mom

I've had this song on repeat since it came out. I'll take a hug anytime, but this is the greatest Alice in Chains song there is... on repeat for ever...
JOHN DILLINGER THE BIKER
Death is not the greatest loss in life. the greatest loss is what dies inside while still alive.

I feel like giving up implies I can try again.
As long as I don't do anything crazy that I can't come back from.
