Glenn Gould (Toronto, Canada 1932-1982) was a Canadian pianist most known for his interpretations of baroque keyboard music, particularly the works of Johann Sebastian Bach.
Gould's first performance to receive widespread attention was his 1955 recording of Bach's Goldberg Variations. His speed, dexterity and tone revolutionized the understanding of this piece and it became inextricably linked with Gould for the remainder of his life. His final recording, in 1981, was also of the Goldberg Variations -- a much more studied and reflective interpretation of the work.
Gould was also known for his uncommon views regarding the value of recorded performances vs. live performances (he stopped performing live in 1964), and regarding some canonical composers (particularly Mozart, whom he referred to as a 'mediocre composer'). Later in his life Gould also became known for his work as a radio documentarian with the Canadian Broadcasting Company (a statue of Gould can be found outside the CBC headquarters in Gould's hometown of Toronto).

everyone thought glenn was crazy for quitting live performances and focusing completely on recording.
everyone was wrong.
a lot of glenn's 'bizzare' opinions/predictions, time has shown to be correct.
too bad he died young-ish.
glenn would have loved the internet. i can picture him with his own youtube channel, releasing music constantly (maybe even electronic music, one of his predictions for the future of music), and replying to every comment.

What a dream that would have been!

I miss Gould very much. But imagining him in the age of the internet as you do brings a smile to my face. I agree: he would have loved every minute of it.

Wow you are so right, especially the part about him responding to every comment----he totally seems like that kind of guy. It's funny cause just the other day while lost in thought I looked up at the ceiling and thought "You know, Glenn Gould would've absolutely adored YouTube..."
Temmosus
It's one of those performances you listen to, where you get to the end, and realise you've been forgetting to breathe.
Daniel Holmqvist
That was beautiful

Sorry, no.
It breathes me.

It is so true....

I totally agree. An older Gould, tender and gentle.
Adam Langfelder
