Glenn Gould (Toronto, Canada 1932-1982) was a Canadian pianist most known for his interpretations of baroque keyboard music, particularly the works of Johann Sebastian Bach.

Gould's first performance to receive widespread attention was his 1955 recording of Bach's Goldberg Variations. His speed, dexterity and tone revolutionized the understanding of this piece and it became inextricably linked with Gould for the remainder of his life. Gould was also known for his uncommon views regarding the value of recorded performances vs. live performances (he stopped performing live in 1964), and regarding some canonical composers (particularly Mozart, whom he referred to as a 'mediocre composer'). Later in his life Gould also became known for his work as a radio documentarian with the Canadian Broadcasting Company (a statue of Gould can be found outside the CBC headquarters in Gould's hometown of Toronto).

I practiced for months on this piece to try and get it just right, I can play it perfectly but it never sounds like this. It's almost as if I can't get the feeling of the music to come through. I have such a love hate relationship with Glenn Gould. I love his mastery but I hate the fact that he is so far superior to any pianist in recent times he makes everyone sound inferior.

I've never heard such a simple piece of music played in such a fascinating way. He had some form of synesthesia for sure. Just the way he sort of bonds his voice to the notes of the piano...makes me wonder if the humming wasn't so much a habit as it was an intentional means of making the piano more resonant and voice-like. Not to mention it gives the recordings an eerie & wistful quality. It almost sounds like an elderly man gently weeping in another room...especially when he enters the minor key. Chilling...

Abraham, thanks for your comment. At my wedding, I asked my piano teacher, Wim Ibes, to play this piece at the Offertory. I had no idea. He played it, with great aplomb, but later told me just how difficult this 'simple tune' really was.
Gould and Ibes make it sound easy, but, that shows just how good they were/are.

The humming is beautiful, like his playing. I love the way he picks out part of the melody to hum. Its like an insight into his mind. It expressive his love for the melody. Its like he wants to sing to it, out of respect and appreciation and love. Gould is the greatest pianist of our generation. And Bach is the greatest of all the composers.

I was like, "Is there a malfunction on my com? Why is there... humming?? OMG It's Glenn himself." My teachers do that when I play sometimes, that's why I'm used to it. :)) But it's still LOL.

This is surely one of the loveliest performances of one of the most beautiful works of art ever written. Gould's playing is perfectly calibrated, and uttered with perfect simplicity.

Every time I hear this I am reminded of what iI felt the first time I ever heard it , that it is possibly the best piece of music ever written. And who better to play it than Mr Gould?

Such a slow tempo for this recording but very beautiful. It is incredible how fast he plays some of Mozart's piano sonatas and how profound they are at rapid tempos.
