Her first album, Abbey Lincoln's Affair, A Story of a Girl in Love was released in 1956. Also that year Lincoln starred in the film The Girl Can't Help It, for which she famously wore a dress worn by Marilyn Monroe.
Lincoln sang on the 1960s landmark jazz civil rights recording, We Insist! - Freedom Now Suite in 1960 by jazz musician and Lincolns husband from 1962-1970, Max Roach. Especially since this album, Abbey Lincoln was connected to the political fight against racism in the United States.
She co-starred with Sidney Poitier and Beau Bridges in 1968's For Love of Ivy and received a 1969 Golden Globe nomination for her appearance in the film. She also starred in the 1990 Spike Lee movie Mo' Better Blues.
In 2003, she received the National Endowment for the Arts NEA Jazz Masters Award.
Lincoln died on August 14, 2010 in Manhattan at the age of 80. Although no official cause of death was given, Lincoln had suffered deteriorating health following open heart surgery in 2007. She passed away in a Manhattan nursing home.
Throw It Away

A figure made of clay
And think about the things I lost
The things I gave away
And when I'm in a certain mood
I search the house and look
One night I found these magic words
In a magic book
Throw it away
Throw it away
Give your love, live your life
Each and every day
And keep your hand wide open
Let the sun shine through
'Cause you can never lose a thing
If it belongs to you
There's a hand to rock the cradle
And a hand to help us stand
With a gentle kind of motion
As it moves across the land
And the hand's unclenched and open
Gifts of life and love it brings
So keep your hand wide open
If you're needing anything
Throw it away
Throw it away
Give your love, live your life
Each and every day
And keep your hand wide open
Let the sun shine through
'Cause you can never lose a thing
If it belongs to you
Throw it away
Throw it away
Give your love, live your life
Each and every day
And keep your hand wide open
Let the sun shine through
'Cause you can never lose a thing
If it belongs to you
'Cause you can never lose a thing
If it belongs to you
You can never ever lose a thing
If it belongs to you
You can never ever lose a thing
If it belongs to you
You can never ever lose a thing
If it belongs to you
The song Throw It Away by Abbey Lincoln is a poetic reflection upon the obstacles and priorities of life. The first verse portrays the sense of fragility of human existence that makes the singer question their choices and decisions. The reference to a "figure made of clay" further emphasizes their feeling of being vulnerable and easily destructible. The line "And think about the things I lost, the things I gave away" indicates the singer may have regrets over the things they have let go of or wish they could have kept.
However, the second verse introduces a glimmer of hope and empowerment. The singer discovers a "magic book" that contains the words "throw it away." This phrase becomes the refrain of the song and takes on a different meaning each time it is repeated. Essentially, it urges the listener to give away the negative thoughts and emotions that weigh them down and instead focus on giving love and living life. The subsequent lines encourage the listener to keep their hand wide open and let the sun shine through, indicating a sense of receptiveness and gratitude towards life. The final repetition of "You can never ever lose a thing if it belongs to you" takes on a more profound meaning that suggests that the things that truly belong to us cannot be lost because they are inherent to our being.
Overall, the song presents a message of self-discovery, letting go, and embracing life with open arms. It urges the listener to find the courage to let go of the negative past and focus on the present moment, full of love and promise.

I think about the life I live
I ponder upon the existence I lead
A figure made of clay
My body is malleable like clay
And think about the things I lost
I recollect the things I no longer have
The things I gave away
The things I willingly parted with
And when I'm in a certain mood
During specific emotions I experience
I search the house and look
I scour the house for something
One night I found these magic words
I stumbled upon these enchanting words
In a magic book
Contained in a book of sorcery
Throw it away
Discard it completely
Give your love, live your life
Bestow your love and exist fully
Each and every day
Every day, without exception
And keep your hand wide open
Remain receptive to things coming your way
Let the sun shine through
Allow positivity to enter your life
'Cause you can never lose a thing
An assurance that you will never lose what's truly yours
If it belongs to you
If it's truly yours, it'll never depart from you
There's a hand to rock the cradle
There's someone to nurture and care for us
And a hand to help us stand
And someone to aid and support us
With a gentle kind of motion
In a tender, compassionate way
As it moves across the land
While traversing the world
And the hand's unclenched and open
With a relaxed, exposed palm
Gifts of life and love it brings
It offers life and love as a present
So keep your hand wide open
Therefore, maintain your open hand
If you're needing anything
In case you require anything
You can never ever lose a thing
You shall never part with what's rightfully yours
If it belongs to you
If indeed it's yours to keep,
