Body and Soul
Coleman Hawkins Lyrics

My heart is sad and lonely
For you I sigh, for you dear only
Why haven't you seen it
I'm all for you body and soul

I spend my days in longing
And wondering why it's me you're wronging
I tell you I mean it
I'm all for you body and soul

I can't believe it
It's hard to conceive it
That you'd turn away romance
Are you pretending
It looks like the ending
Unless I could have just one more chance to prove, dear

My life a wreck you're making
You know I'm yours for just the taking
I'd gladly surrender myself to you body and soul

My life a wreck you're making
You know I'm yours for the very taking
I'd gladly surrender myself to you body and soul

With no rehearsal and just one take, Hawkins captured musical lightning. “His eyes were closed,” his pianist Gene Rodgers recalled, “and he just played as if he was in heaven.”

God said to Coleman "Trust Me" and Coleman said, "I hear you Lord"

No rehearsal and just one take ?!
I first heard this in my early youth .....it blew me away but back then with notions of love and romance whirling around in my undeveloped brain .
As time progressed and new understandings of the world came my way I felt this profound tune was about the mysteries of the universe , divine energies , our lives as body's and souls.
Your information regarding the recording of this song was therefore essential reading.
I'm crying a little .

Lots of jazzy people think this is one of the greatest moments of recorded Music. They are right...

I'm so glad to read that 'cos I was commenting with someone saying give me this tune over the cerebralness and complexities of a John Coltrane - and they replied in a very dismissive way .

Lawrence Muller

I think so too.
