Lost Again
Dance Hall Crashers Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Lost again, somebody tell me how to get there
Cause I can't take another handshake
Or another blank stare
Thought I knew what I had to do to get through to you
Guess your head is thicker than I thought
You know I am starting to think that it might be you
Cause I know you've got a lot of things
And people you look to
Do you believe that I never see what you're doing to me?
I'll keep smiling till the door closes behind me

I know where I want to go
But I just don't know
No I just don't know how to get there
I know where I want to go
But I just don't know
No I just don't know how to get there

Lost again, somebody tell me how to get there
If I hit another detour I'm afraid that I won't care
Who'd have thought that I'd have bought the expectations
That gold road probably just leads straight to hell
And once I'm there are you gonna care or conveniently look away
I don't think I want us to fall off and die that way
Do you believe that I never see what you're doing to me?
I'll keep smiling till the door closes behind me

I know where I want to go
But I just don't know
No I just don't know how to get there
I know where I want to go
But I just don't know
No I just don't know how to get there

Do you, do you, do you?? Tell me if you do

Overall Meaning

The overall theme of the Dance Hall Crashers' song "Lost Again" is the feeling of being lost and unsure of how to find one's way. The lyrics touch on the frustration of not being able to connect with someone, the feeling of being misguided, and the fear of ending up in a bad situation.

The song opens with the lyrics "Lost again, somebody tell me how to get there / Cause I can't take another handshake / Or another blank stare." The singer is lost and looking for guidance from someone else. Perhaps they have tried to connect with someone but have been unsuccessful, as indicated by the line "Thought I knew what I had to do to get through to you / Guess your head is thicker than I thought." The singer is becoming increasingly frustrated and feels like the other person is not making an effort to understand them.

The second verse continues with the theme of feeling lost and misguided: "If I hit another detour I'm afraid that I won't care / Who'd have thought that I'd have bought the expectations / That gold road probably just leads straight to hell." The singer is questioning their own judgment and wondering if they are making the right decisions. They are also worried about what will happen to them if they continue down the path they are on. However, despite all of this uncertainty, the song ends with a plea for honesty and connection: "Do you, do you, do you?? Tell me if you do."

Overall, "Lost Again" is a song about feeling adrift and searching for guidance. It touches on themes of frustration, uncertainty, and fear, ultimately calling for honesty and openness in relationships.

When I listen to it, it makes me sad in a good way. It makes me think it's being sung to a terminally ill child.
"Why are you worried about the dirt? I don't think that you'll mind. When it's your time." And the "promise I'll wait a while. To make sure that you've moved on." If it's a lullaby, it's scary. Ha. I thought maybe it was her singing to her grandma on her deathbed, too. Makes more sense I guess.
