Milk Cow Blues
Sleepy John Estes Lyrics

Now asks sweet mama
Lemme be her kid
She says, 'I might get boogied
Like to keep it hid'

Well, she looked at me
She be-gin to smile
Says, 'I thought I would use you
For my man a while

'That you just don't my husband
Catch you there
Now, just-just don't let my
Husband catch you there'

Now, went upstairs
To pack my leavin' trunk
I never saw no whiskey
The blues done made me, sloppy drunk

Say, I never saw no whiskey
Blues done made me sloppy drunk
Now, I never saw no whiskey
But the blues done made me sloppy drunk

Now some said, disease
Some said it was, degree'in
But it's the slow consumption
Killin' you by degrees
Lord, it's the slow consumption
Killin' you by degrees
Now, it's-a slow consumption
An it's killin' you by degrees.

@Peter Måhlin I love Sleepy John Estes music. He is unique with his voice and his phrasing. I remember when I first tried to learn Drop Down Mama, getting the timing down was so hard. Anyway, it's been a long time since I tried to transcribe an old blues. I'm shaky on a couple of lines, but here's my best effort...

Now I asks sweet mama let me be her kid
She says I might get bugged(buggied) got to keep it hid
Well she looked at me she begin to smile
Says I thought I would use for my man a while
Just don't let my husband catch you there
Now just don't let my husband catch you there

Now went upstairs to pack my leavin trunk
I never saw no whiskey the blues done made me sloppy drunk
Say I never saw no whiskey, the blues made me sloppy drunk
Now I never saw no whiskey but the blues done made me sloppy drunk

Now some say it was the bean, some said it was the beans
but it's the slow consumption killing you by degrees
Lord it's the slow consumption killing you by degrees
Now it's the slow consumption and it's killing you by degrees.

The mandolin player he played with - Yank Rachell - lived his last years here in Indianapolis and was friends with many of my blues friends.

This song is not Milkcow blues but is a wonderful song. 'Smoke on something' I think is the real name. But John Estes is excellent and Yank Rachell mandolin is excellent, Bill Monroe would be a fan for sure.
