Birds
Anouk Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Isolated from the outside
Clouds have taken all the light
I have no control it seems my
Thoughts wander off

Of the time when I tried to
Live life without you

Birds falling down the rooftops
Out of the sky like raindrops
No air, no pride

If being myself is what I do wrong
Then I would rather not be right
Hopes turn into fear and with my
One wing I can't fly

With sunrise embrace my
Dreams tight and that's why

Birds falling down the rooftops
Out of the sky like raindrops
No air, no pride
Birds

To a place without fear, with no moonlight
All I need are trees and flowers and some sunlight
Where memories are being made and where the old one dies
Where love ain't lies

Birds falling down the rooftops
Out of the sky like raindrops

Birds falling down the rooftops
Out of the sky like raindrops
No air, no pride
That's why birds don't fly

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Anouk's song "Birds" seem to be about the feeling of isolation and loneliness, and the struggle to move on after a relationship has ended. Anouk sings about being isolated from the outside world, with clouds taking away all the light. She finds it difficult to control her thoughts and feels as though her mind is wandering away from the present moment. She then reflects on the time when she tried to live life without the person who has now left her. The image of birds falling down from the rooftops and out of the sky like raindrops creates a sense of helplessness and despair. Anouk suggests that she has lost her pride and feels as though she has no air to breathe. The repetition of the phrase "no air, no pride" emphasizes the pain and sadness that she is experiencing. She feels as though she is unable to fly with her one wing, possibly representing her feeling of being incomplete without her partner. Despite all of this, Anouk finds hope in the embrace of the sunrise and dreams of a place where memories are made and love is true.

Now that NL seems to have a good chance of winning this year, I think it's time to thank Anouk once again for her gutsy decision to demand to represent the country in the ESC after a long period of misery for the Dutch. After Anouk, going to Eurovision was no longer regarded as an embarrassing thing to do for 'serious artists' in NL. Thank you Anouk!

@rianvandenboogaard4151

Yes, I agree. People tend to forget, but that was a gutsy thing for her to do.

The Netherlands was quite revolutionary with this song. After this entry, and their following slow country pop entries, they really changed the culture in Eurovision of countries grotesque circusshows entries. Now many more entries are ‘real music’ that ‘don’t fit eurovision’. And Anouk (together with the common linnets) started it. Greetings from Germany!

The mid 2010s was the time when the Eurovision stopped with the joke acts and gave us some serious music, and Anouks Birds is a great example of this. Also, the reintroduction of juries in 2009 helped the contest from becoming a total circus that it had turned into during the 2000s.

No they didn't

@@civilservant9528 While I love Anouk and the Netherlands, I would say Lena and Germany in 2010 is a better example of starting a more "radio friendly" sound as a an up and coming standard in Eurovision, I think even the next year's winner (Azerbaijan) also followed that trend to some extent.
