Alone
Green Carnation Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
As others were I have not seen
As others saw I could not bring
My passions from a common spring
From the same source I have not taken
My sorrow, I could not awaken
My heart to joy at the same tone;
And all I loved, I loved alone
Then- in my childhood in the dawn
Of a most stormy life was drawn
From every depth of good and ill
The mystery which binds me still:
From the torrent, or the fountain,
From the red cliff of the mountain,
From the sun that 'round me rolled
In its autumn tint of gold
From the lightning in the sky
As it passed me flying by
From the thunder and the storm,
And the cloud that took form
(When the rest of Heaven was blue)
Of a demon in my view
In "Alone," Green Carnation draws upon Edgar Allen Poe's poem of the same name, and the lyrics reflect the feelings of isolation and loneliness that can be pervasive in life. The first stanza speaks to the idea that the singer has always been different from others, unable to connect with them on their level or feel the same joy that they do. This sense of disconnection continues into the next stanza, where the singer describes the storms of life drawing forth the mysteries that still bind him (or her) in solitude. The sources of these mysteries are varied, from natural wonders like fountains and mountains to more frightening phenomena like lightning and demons. The sense of being alone in one's experiences and perceptions is a key theme of this song.

From childhood's hour I have not been
Since I was young, I've felt different from those around me
As others were I have not seen
I don't perceive things the way others do
As others saw I could not bring
I can't express my feelings in the same way others can
My passions from a common spring
I don't have the same interests as everyone else
From the same source I have not taken
I haven't been influenced by the same things as others
My sorrow, I could not awaken
I have my own unique sadness that I can't explain
My heart to joy at the same tone;
I don't experience the same happiness as others
And all I loved, I loved alone
The things I cherish, I cherish alone
Then- in my childhood in the dawn
In my early life, during a new beginning,
Of a most stormy life was drawn
The tumultuous events of my early years became a defining force
From every depth of good and ill
Through both positive and negative experiences
The mystery which binds me still:
I am still bound to the unknown force that defines me
From the torrent, or the fountain,
From the turbulent and the calm,
From the red cliff of the mountain,
From the impassable obstacles,
From the sun that 'round me rolled
From the bright light that surrounded me
In its autumn tint of gold
In the warm, fading light of the fall
From the lightning in the sky
From the sudden and electric
As it passed me flying by
As it moved quickly away from me
From the thunder and the storm,
From the loud struggles and upheavals,
And the cloud that took form
The cloud that became something else
(When the rest of Heaven was blue)
(When everything else was calm and tranquil)
Of a demon in my view
And revealed the demon that haunts me still
