Fallen Fruit
Lorde Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

To the ones who came before us
All the golden ones who were lifted on a wing
We had no idea the dreams we had were far too big
Far too big

And we will walk together
Psychedelic garlands in our hair
Through the halls of splendor where the apple trees all grew
You'll leave us dancing on the fallen fruit
The fallen fruit
The fallen fruit
The fallen fruit

From the Nissan, to the Phantom, to the plane
We'll disappear in the cover of the rain
Took the great minds and the vapers
And a pocketful of seed
It's time for us to leave

And we will walk together
Psychedelic garlands in our hair
But how can I love what I know I am gonna lose?
Don't make me choose

(The fallen fruit)
(The fallen fruit)
(The fallen fruit)

Overall Meaning

In "Fallen Fruit," Lorde pays homage to those who came before us and carried out revolutionary acts, paving the way for the current generation. The "golden ones who were lifted on a wing" refers to these individuals, who had dreams that may have seemed far too big at the time, yet they still pursued them. The lyrics then transition to the present day, with the desire to walk together with the psychedelic garlands in our hair. The idea of this scene taking place in the "halls of splendor" where the apple trees once grew paints a picture of a place that once thrived with life and promise, but has since been forgotten.

However, the focus shifts towards a departure; one that is lined with luxury - from the Nissan, to the Phantom, to the plane. Nonetheless, the rain serves as cover, and they escape with nothing but a "pocketful of seed" and the great minds and vapers. The final verse, "But how can I love what I know I am gonna lose? Don't make me choose," implies the difficulty of knowing that everything you love might not always be there, forcing one to make a choice. In conclusion, "Fallen Fruit" is a bittersweet tune that reconciles the past with the present and acknowledges the inherent transitory nature of life.

people are forgetting that this isn’t supposed to be a growing up and teen feelings album, like her other two, it’s her being an adult now and I think that’s beautiful, even if not for everyone

@paristexas1984

I actually think you are wrong. This is still a growing up album, even more than that, it’s about maturing and understanding personal evolution as something quintessential of the human species, seeing the world with a new perspective as you age and try to connect to it as long as you can.

“O, was enlightenment found?
No, but I'm trying
Taking it one year at a time”

She is just 25 wtf we need pure heroin type album 🥺.

@Justhppy2behere

@@ugurkoksal2976 no, she literally said “now the cherry black lipstick is gathering dust in a drawer, I don’t need her anymore” in the song oceanic feeling. she’s saying that she’s moved on from the pure heroine era and grown up from the depressed teen she was when she made that album.
