Mary
Supergrass Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I got a girl and her name is Mary
I like to shock her on a basis daily
I like to push you over into my stream
I like to point out that her teeth are green
I tell you stories that you won't understand
I'll have you eating from the palm of my hand
I'm gonna push you further into my dream
The back of every head hold something obscene

Ah ay ya ya
Ah ay ya ya

I get the feeling you're not ordinary
I got a head like falling masonry
I'll cut your strings, ah yes, a puppet machine
I watch you drop and fall apart at the seams
I meant to get you; let there be no doubt
You want to try and get your teeth knocked out
I'm gonna push you further into my dream
The back of every head holds something obscene

Ah ay ya ya
Ah ay ya ya

Ah ay ya ya
Ah ay ya ya
Ah ay ya ya
Ay ya ya

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Supergrass's song "Mary" showcase a level of twisted obsession with a girl named Mary. The singer likes to shock Mary on a daily basis, and he enjoys pushing her into his own dream world. His obsession with Mary is shown in lines like "I'm gonna push you further into my dream, the back of every head hold something obscene" and "I get the feeling you're not ordinary, I got a head like falling masonry."

The singer describes himself as a puppet master, capable of cutting Mary's strings and making her fall apart at the seams. He seems to enjoy his power over her, as he encourages her to eat out of the palm of his hand, implying that she is under his control. The line "I tell you stories that you won't understand" suggests that he also manipulates her mentally, keeping her in a state of confusion and perhaps even fear.

Overall, the lyrics of "Mary" suggest a dark and unsettling portrayal of obsession and control. The singer's distorted view of his relationship with Mary is undoubtedly unhealthy and perhaps even dangerous.

Rob added so much to the band with the electric organ. Very underrated member. Changed their sound really.

Of all of them though he seems to purposely avoid the spotlight. You're dead on though, he could do funky parts but he'd also drop atmospheric parts that always put me in mind of Richard Wright from Pink Floyd

@numsig

@@iain2080 with maybe the exception of Danny, they ALL try to avoid the spotlight. Not many tabloids scoops about these boys, only a trail of classic tunes!
