Here Comes The Anxiety
The Wombats Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I'd say that this is darkest song I ever wrote
No hint of a smile, or the usual quirky anecdotes
No, this is a song about someone knew what not to say
What not to do, so now, I think I'll just be honest.

I hope that no one ever leaves,
'Cause I don't wanna be alone with me
Not with the things that rush up and down this symphonous smile
Here comes the love anxiety
Can't let it grab a hold of me, not after last time

Why'd you have to wear skirts and heels like that?
She's blinding anyway but now she's floodlighting up the match
Well it's twenty minutes 'til showtime
But the backstage is the stage tonight
So now, I think I'll just be honest

I hope that no one ever leaves
'Cause I don't wanna be alone with me
Not with the things that rush up and down this symphonous smile

Here comes the love anxiety
Can't let it grab a hold of me
Not like the last time
Here comes the love anxiety
It's gonna grab a hold of me, just like the last time

Overall Meaning

The Wombats' song "Here Comes The Anxiety" is a direct exposition of love anxiety that the songwriter experiences. The song has a serious and dark tone with no hint of their usual quirky anecdotes. The opening line of the song sets the stage for the rest of the lyrics, manifesting the artist's seriousness in discussing their struggles with anxiety. The songwriter acknowledges that this is the darkest song he ever wrote and talks about someone who knows what not to say, what not to do, which could be seen as a personification of his internal voice.

As the song progresses, the artist sings about his fear of being alone with his thoughts and the things that rush up and down his symphonous smile. Anxiety is tainting his perception of love, as demonstrated by the lines "Here comes the love anxiety, Can't let it grab a hold of me, not like the last time." The songwriter is projecting his fear of love and the anxiety that comes with it.

In the last verse, the songwriter is addressing a person whom he is attracted to but fears because of the anxiety that love brings. He acknowledges her beauty in "Why'd you have to wear skirts and heels like that?" but is also overwhelmed by the sight of her, representing the contrast between the intense attraction and the anxiety that ensues.

Overall, "Here Comes The Anxiety" is a cathartic expression of anxiety about love and the fear of being left alone with one's thoughts, which many can relate to.

@supDezrt Since that time I've listened to this album more and it's grown on me so now I like both albums pretty much the same, and I find them both amazing, yeah their new one has different styles but still a lot of their songs are similar and sweet.
