Compliment
Collective Soul Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Of a beautiful calm
Can you see this disguise
Fading to a resolve
And there it goes my innocence
While gathering up a compliment
And here I lie with words to swear
There's something more than
The world out there
Hesitation compounds
I've nothing left to sustain
My worries here have allowed
A momentary refrain
And there it goes my innocence
While gathering up a compliment
And here I lie with words to swear
There's something more
Than the world out there
In Collective Soul's song "Compliment," the singer seems to be dealing with a crisis of identity and disillusionment. The first stanza suggests that they've taken on a persona that is calm and beautiful, but it's just a disguise that is starting to crumble. They seem to be realizing that they've lost their innocence and traded it in for compliments that they may not even believe in. The second stanza indicates that the singer may have been trying to find something more meaningful in the world but hesitated and ended up stuck in their worries. Despite their fears and doubts, they realize that there is more to life than what they've been focusing on.
The theme of identity seems to be central to this song, as the singer struggles with who they are and who they want to be. The reference to "gathering up a compliment" implies a desire for validation, perhaps indicating that the singer is unsure of their own worth. However, the line "And here I lie with words to swear" suggests that they are trying to convince themselves of something, even if they don't fully believe it yet. The repeated phrase "There's something more than the world out there" suggests that the singer is seeking something deeper and more meaningful than the surface-level compliments and worries that they've been caught up in.

The Demon That Laughs
The Demon that laughs, he never cries. He thrives in one's self-destruction and has no discrimination in his eyes. It is through his influence that the addict becomes enslaved through his lies. The addict has become a miserable mess. His thoughts are always on when he will get high next. See that demon laugh, he has no sympathy. This addict's life is now filled with self-inflicted pain and misery.
Ha, ha, ha the addict hears a fading laugh. That demon has put him in his grave at last.
