Evening Falls
Enya Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

When the evening falls
And the daylight is fading
From within me calls
Could it be I am sleeping?
For a moment I stray
Then it holds me completely
Close to home, I cannot say
Close to home, feeling so far away

As I walk the room
There before me a shadow
From another world
Where no other can follow
Carry me to my own
To where I can cross over,
Close to home, I cannot say
Close to home, feeling so far away

Forever searching, never right
I am lost in oceans of night
Forever hoping I can find memories
Those memories I left behind

Even though I leave
Will I go on believing
That this time is real
Am I lost in this feeling?
Like a child passing through
Never knowing the reason
I am home, I know the way
I am home, feeling oh, so far away

Overall Meaning

Enya's "Evening Falls" is a song that deals with the themes of memory, longing, and the blurry lines between reality and fantasy. The song starts with the singer, presumably me, feeling a sense of confusion and uncertainty as the daylight fades away. The line "Could it be I am sleeping?" suggests that the singer is in a dreamlike state, where reality and imagination blur, and one's emotions can take over. The sense of being lost, which is a recurring theme in the song, is further emphasized by the line "Close to home, feeling so far away," where the singer is trying to search for something familiar and comforting, but they can't seem to reach it.

In the second verse, the singer notices a shadow from "another world" that nobody else can follow, which indicates that their journey towards finding their desired destination is a solitary one. The singer yearns for a place where they can be themselves and cross over to the other side but doesn't know where that is. The lines "Forever searching, never right, I am lost in oceans of night" add to the sense of displacement and the singer's inability to find their way back home.

The final verse offers a hint of resolution as the singer finds a sense of homecoming. The line "I am home, feeling so far away" suggests that the singer has reached their destination but still feels disconnected from it. However, by the end of the song, the singer accepts that they have found their way home and that they may never understand the reason for their wandering. The song's overall message seems to be that even though we may feel lost and disconnected from our surroundings, we can still find a sense of homecoming if we keep searching for it.

She has a sister whose music and voice are equally beautiful.

Enya used to in Clannad right?

1988, I walked into a record store in Colorado Springs. They were playing Watermark. I've listened to every one of her songs since then. A beautiful woman who can bring a grown man to tears is an angel. She is magnificent, a treasure, and an awakening into real music.

@mikekaraoke

Yea I totally agree, Another woman that does that to me with so much emotion is Kate Bush
I live near where Kate Bush lived in Kent in Welling-I live near Dartford/Bexleyheath way
Where you from Jim?

@gamers7800

He’s from the state and I agree, some of the most beautiful music from one of the beautiful voices!

@gilbeau5254

Her song 'May It Be' from Lord of the Rings gets me every time.

@uncatila

I had a crush on her. I thought I'd go to Ireland and sit at the pub near her house hoping for a chance encounter. Another guy beat me to it. He got arested and beaten up for being a stalker.

@fenikslied

Is your name really Jim Crow?
