Georgy Girl
The Seekers Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Hey there, Georgy girl
Swinging down the street so fancy-free
Nobody you meet could ever see the loneliness there inside you
Hey there, Georgy girl
Why do all the boys just pass you by?
Could it be you just don't try or is it the clothes you wear?

You're always window shopping but never stopping to buy
So shed those dowdy feathers and fly a little bit

Hey there, Georgy girl
There's another Georgy deep inside
Bring out all the love you hide and, oh, what a change there'd be
The world would see a new Georgy girl

Hey there, Georgy girl
Dreaming of the someone you could be
Life is a reality, you can't always run away
Don't be so scared of changing and rearranging yourself
It's time for jumping down from the shelf a little bit

Hey there, Georgy girl
There's another Georgy deep inside
Bring out all the love you hide and, oh, what a change there'd be
The world would see a new Georgy girl

(Hey there, Georgy girl)
Wake up, Georgy girl
(Hey there, Georgy girl)
Come on, Georgy girl
(Hey there, Georgy girl)
Wake up, Georgy girl

Overall Meaning

The Seekers' Georgy Girl is a song about a young woman named Georgy who is feeling lonely despite the fact that she struts down the street "fancy-free," with no cares in the world. The lyrics suggest that nobody can see the loneliness inside her. Perhaps, Georgy is hiding behind a façade of joy and freedom, but in reality, she's struggling with loneliness. Could it be that Georgy's upbeat and carefree demeanor is a mask for deeper struggles, her insecurities and fears?

The lyrics go on to say that although Georgy is attractive, the boys still pass her by. The writer asks if it is maybe the clothes she wears or if she is not even trying to win the boys' affection. The writer is trying to encourage Georgy to be more confident, to show off her beauty, and not to be afraid to make herself available.

The song concludes with the writer inspiring Georgy to find another side of herself - her other hidden aspects of herself. They are encouraging her to be herself and to come out of her shell. If only she could reveal all the love she hides, the world would see a new Georgy girl. Overall, the song is about self-confidence, self-love, and pushing yourself to step into the light and be seen.

I was 8 years old in 1967, I will never forget the first time I heard this song Georgy Girl by The Seekers, my parents took me to a hotdog stand to eat, sitting at the table were the old music turn-stiles, my father gave me a nickel to play a song and this is the song I played.

I luv it so much I couldn't stop listening to it. I have been and remain a devout Judith Durham / Seekers fan my whole life.

Judith Durham's voice is exquisite, and the harmony of the band members with their acoustic guitars and string bass is just amazing. It's pure talent, no electronic instrumentation whatsoever.

The pop hits they recorded are not just great in music composition, lyrics, and harmony, they're iconic, and stands the test of time to this day.

RIP Judith Durham, you will always be in my heart, part of my youth that forever reminds me of my youth, and my parents who have long passed away.

I’m 42yrs old and I heard this song for the first time yesterday at a Pilot gas station in Ohio. As an avid Simpsons fan I’ve heard them parody this song a couple times but had no idea that it was linked to an actual band. I almost forgot that there was a time where singers could ACTUALLY sing and they sang songs that were encouraging and inspiring. Everything about this song is great from the lead vocalist to the harmonizing backup singers to the instruments. This type of talent simply doesn’t exist anymore

@helenbartoszek243

It does but it is rare to find a band who actually write their own songs and play instruments nowadays.

I grew up with her in high school. Love her voice and class!

@geeamouse

It's actually the title song to the film "Georgy Girl" with Lynn Redgrave.

@bauble24

I'm 49 and I remember when I was a kid I would see Barbie commercials using that song but the lyrics changed to Barbie Girl. As i got older I heard this version and I've been hooked ever since.

The 'lead vocalist' is Australian national treasure Judith Durham. I think you'll be astonished by doing a thorough search of her very long career. Sadly, she passed away last August.

In 1969 I was a 19 year old Marine Sergeant. I was thousands of miles from home and in harms way. My girlfriend had sent me a “Dear John” informing me she was getting married and not to write or call her anymore. I was listening to Armed Forces Radio and the Seekers “GEORGIE GIRL” was playing on the radio. I found a picture of the young lady who was the lead singer for the Seekers. I fell instantly in love with her. I promised myself if I made it through the war I was going to marry her.🤣 Well, that didn’t happen but that fantasy helped me get through what seemed like and eternity in Vietnam. GREAT MEMORIES!
