You Make Me Want To Be A Man
宇多田ヒカル Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I really want to tell you something
This is just the way I am
I really want to tell you something, but I can't
You make me want to be a man

Arguments that have no meaning
This is just the way I am
You really want to tell me something, but you can't
You make me want to be a man

The thunder and the rain called you and you came
We didn't need to say much to communicate
Now it's different, 99% is misinterpreted

I really want to tell you something
This is just the way I am
I really want to tell you something, but I can't
You make me want to be a man

Arguments that have no meaning
This is just the way I am
You really want to tell me something, but you can't
You make me want to be a man

Every word you say finds a home in me
Nothing that anyone could ever say
Could hurt me like this
Baby please, don't light that cigarette
Don't light that cigarette

I really want to tell you something
This is just the way I am
I really want to tell you something, but I can't
You make me want to be a man

Arguments that have no meaning
This is just the way I am
You really want to tell me something, but you can't
You make me want to be a man

I really want to tell you something
This is just the way I am
I really want to tell you something, but I can't
You make me want to be a man

Arguments that have no meaning
This is just the way I am

You really want to tell me something, but you can't
You make me want to be a man

Overall Meaning

"You Make Me Want To Be A Man" by 宇多田ヒカル appears to be about someone who is struggling to communicate their feelings and thoughts to the person they love. Throughout the song, the singer expresses their desire to tell their loved one something but finds themselves unable to do so. They feel frustrated and helpless, and it seems that they are struggling with their own identity and masculinity - hence the title's phrase "You make me want to be a man."

The second verse suggests that the singer and their loved one used to have a strong connection - "the thunder and the rain called you and you came/ We didn't need to say much to communicate." However, things have changed, and now the singer feels that most of what they say is misinterpreted. The chorus repeats the idea that the loved one is having an impact on the singer's identity, making them want to become a better, more mature person.

The final verse is particularly poignant, as the singer begs their loved one not to light a cigarette - a small, intimate moment that suggests the depth of feeling between the two. It seems that the singer is desperate for a way to convey their emotions, but feels trapped by their own personality and insecurities.

Overall, the song is a complex exploration of intimacy, identity, and communication in a relationship. The singer seems to be struggling with their own sense of self, and is perhaps even scared of opening up to their loved one. However, the bond between them is strong enough that even small moments can carry great weight.

I used to listen to this while walking patrols at night in my very first job as a security guard like 9 years ago! Life changes but a piece of music remains exactly as it is :)

I freaking love this song and i think it's such a shame that it's almost entirely unknown out with her fan base. She creates the most interesting and catchy music and should be playing host to millionssss of subscribers.

I remember Utada stating that this song was about her wanting to have a mutual understanding with her ex-husband. The fact that women and men are so different makes it hard for her to understand the meaningless arguments between him and her, so she wants to be a man in order to understand his point of view. A really deep song, and I'm sure it meant a lot to Utada.

Hence why I think it's amazing how she's trying to get over it by creating this song it's her way to deal with drama ..this is superb.

@Ugly Bastard (INACTIVE) ...so you say you like the song because it frames women instead of men, got it. Also completely misinterpreted, but not a surprise.
