He has contributed to the musical scores of the Mamoru Oshii (押井守) movies 攻殻機動隊 (Ghost in the Shell, 1995), イノセンス (Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence, 2004), ケルベロス 地獄の番犬 (Stray Dog: Kerberos Panzer Cops, 2001), 紅い眼鏡 (The Red Spectacles, 1987) or Avalon (2001), as well as Hideo Nakata's (中田秀夫) films リング (Ringu, 1998), リング 2 (Ringu 2, 1999), 仄暗い水の底から (Dark Water, 2002), 怪談 (Kaidan, 2007), and 機動戦士ガンダム00 (Mobile Suit Gundam 00, 2008). After dropping out of a nuclear engineering program at Tokai University, Kenji Kawai began studying music at Shobi Music Academy. However, he dropped out after half a year. After leaving Muse, Kenji Kawai began composing music for commercials in his home studio. While recording music for radio actor Yuji Mitsuya he met music director Naoko Asari, who advised him to compose anime soundtracks. Some of his work for anime soundtracks can be found in Ranma ½ , Ghost in the Shell and in the well-known recent film Death Note.
Following his success as an anime movies music composer, he became involved in live action movies. He contributed music to horror movies: Ringu, Ringu 2, Dark Water, polish-japanese science-fiction movie Avalon and Chinese movie Seven Swords. He has worked on several projects with director Mamoru Oshii (both Headgear members) and has written scores for all of the Hideo Nakata's films. The most recent film featuring his music is 2007's "Kaidan" by director Hideo Nakata.

(SPOILERS) This scene was the best in the film. It seems like a suicide mission to the naked eye, but when you put the majors motives, questions and wishes in the equation, it really makes sense what she does. This scene represents the ascension of a being into a new realm of realities without the limitations of the physical world. The way its depicted seems almost spiritual, when she breaks her body to get to the truth behind the puppet master. A nice touch was The Tree of Gnosis riddled with bullets - "In Gnosticism, the world of the demiurge is represented by the lower world, which is associated with matter, flesh, time and, more particularly, an imperfect, ephemeral world. The world of God is represented by the upper world and is associated with the soul and perfection. The world of God is eternal and not part of the physical. It is impalpable and timeless." - So this scene represents the Major's ascension: death as the discontinuation of her physical existence, and rebirth as opposed to oblivion, when she is "emancipated" into the boundless world of information which, in a sense, would be "a paradise for machines".... such symbolism.

Douglas Zanini Well said.

Bingo! You hit the nail on the spot.
@MartinBuzon
Have you red about Arthur Koestler?
@Trid3nt861
I actually thought of that when I saw this scene. Especially the invisible tank with the rapid gattling turrets, the constant evading of bullets while she is cloaked and the bullets pock-marking the wall with that Tree on it all the way to the top.

We are flatlanders. Thats the answer to the riddle. We think time is flat but it is curved. We think the finite is all that is real, when the finite is all that is not real.
@Imgema
The scene with the choir part, where she tries to open the hatch, is one of the best hand made animation sequences ever produced. Definitely in the top 3.
@nisanasaf
i would go as far to suggest that it's one of the best MOVIE sequences ever produced.
@w2kafka
Major vs. Tank. Beautiful fight scene.
@TheCoppoy
anime, not that shitty movie
