In July 1989 after her death, she became the first female recipient of the National Prize of Honour (国民栄誉賞) for her longstanding contributions to the music industry.

The lyrics of 美空ひばり's song シナの夜 describe the beauty and mystery of a night in China. The singer speaks of the harbor lights shining against the purple night sky as a dream ship, a Junk, rises above the water. In this dreamy night, the sound of the Erhu, a two-stringed Chinese instrument, still echoes in the singer's mind. The second verse brings in the imagery of a lantern, flickering outside a willow window, and a cage holding a red bird, which is a symbol of a Chinese girl. In this unstable and passionate love, the singer can only express her unbearable feelings with a love song. In the last verse, the singer describes the night waiting for her lover in the balcony, where the rain falls, and the flowers and red leaves scatter. Despite the sorrow of parting, the singer finds comfort in the unforgettable memories of this fascinating place - China's night.
The song perfectly captures the atmosphere of a Chinese night, transporting the listener to another place and time. The lyrics bring in the imagery of the lantern-lit windows, the sound of the erhu, and the beauty of the harbor lights. It's a song that celebrates the beauty and mystery of China's night, but also talks about the torment of love, the sorrow of parting, and the power of memories.
